Mary Elizabeth Winstead Set to Join Remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the upcoming reboot of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” has certainly piqued my interest. Having witnessed the original back in 1992, I remember being captivated by Rebecca De Mornay’s chilling performance and Annabella Sciorra’s vulnerability.

20th Century Studios is planning a new adaptation of the 1992 suspenseful movie titled “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”. Negotiations are ongoing for a popular actress from “Star Wars” to join forces with horror icon Maika Monroe in this revival. Michelle Garza Cervera has been assigned as the director, and the script is penned by Micah Bloomberg, who created the psychological drama series “Homecoming” on Amazon Prime Video and the romantic comedy film “Sanctuary”, featuring Margaret Qualley.

In this film, directed by Curtis Hanson, Rebecca De Mornay plays the role of a pregnant wife whose husband, a physician, is accused of sexual misconduct and takes his own life. The tragic event causes her to lose the baby. Subsequently, she disguises herself as a nanny for one of her late husband’s accusers (Annabella Sciorra), gradually gaining access to their family. The plot revolves around a tense cat-and-mouse game between a malevolent and manipulative caregiver seeking vengeance on an innocent, contented wife. This suspenseful tale fascinated audiences worldwide, grossing $88 million.

More than three decades past, De Mornay appeared taken aback by the movie’s triumph, as she confessed in a recent chat with The Independent.

I was just as surprised by the final outcome as anyone else would be. Initially, I didn’t anticipate enjoying a film about a malevolent caregiver.” (The reference is to the movie “Misery” where the quote comes from.)

Michelle Garza Cervera Takes On the ‘Maternal Horror’ Subgenre

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Set to Join Remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that in the upcoming remake, I’ll be stepping into the shoes previously filled by Sciorra, while Monroe will breathe new life into the iconic role once played by De Mornay. This project adds another notch to Monroe’s already impressive collection of horror masterpieces and psychological thrillers. This year, her performance in the suspenseful film “Longlegs” alongside Nicolas Cage earned her high praise, and she’s also set to return for the sequel of “It Follows,” titled “They Follow.” On the small screen, you can catch me starring in the Disney+ “Star Wars” series “Ahsoka,” and I’ll be appearing in the Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow” alongside Ewan McGregor.

In the remake of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” the captivating partnership between Winstead and Monroe is expected to resonate with contemporary viewers. Spectators are anticipating that the remaining cast members will exhibit a comparable on-screen charisma as this duo. The 1992 film drew its essence from William Ross Wallace’s poem, which extols the significance of women and motherhood: “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World.” Cervera will delve deeper into this topic in the forthcoming reboot, as part of her ongoing exploration within the “maternal horror” subgenre.

In 2022, the filmmaker garnered universal praise for her chilling masterpiece, Huesera – a body horror film that delves into a mother’s transformation under supernatural influences. As a movie reviewer, I found myself captivated by her unique exploration of blending horror with maternal characters. In an interview with Paste Magazine, Cervera shared her fascination with this intriguing combination.

I’ve been creating short films with a horror aesthetic for quite some time, but when I chose this theme, I was absolutely convinced that horror was the ideal fit because it offers a unique lens to delve into subjects that are challenging to discuss openly. It might seem commonplace to talk about certain aspects of parenthood in our society, but in my country, it’s far from the norm!

Ted Field, together with Michael Schaefer and Mike Larocca from Radar Pictures, are set to produce the upcoming movie adaptation of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle“. Although a release date for the new title hasn’t been announced yet, interested viewers can currently rent the original film on Prime Video within the U.S. in the interim.
