As a seasoned movie reviewer, who has had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of Hollywood through the decades, I must say that Dick Van Dyke‘s latest adventure is as captivating as any blockbuster film. The 98-year-old legend, known for his charm and resilience, found himself in a real-life drama, battling against the raging flames of wildfires in Malibu.
Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke shared a harrowing tale of being saved from wildfires by his neighbors in Malibu. As the Franklin Fire, which has scorched more than 2,600 acres, approached his estate, his neighbors bravely picked up the 98-year-old and carried him to safety. A Ring camera recorded Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene Silver, along with their pets, leaving the property amidst smoke and ash. Van Dyke’s dramatic rescue happened mere days before his upcoming 99th birthday on December 13.
According to the Mary Poppins star, it appeared to be originating from the hill, and it was clearly visible. She recounted on the Today show, “Oh my goodness, we quickly escaped! I was trying to crawl to the car, utterly drained. I couldn’t get up. Three neighbors came to help me out and even put out a small fire in the guest house, saving me.
Van Dyke posted on Facebook to share that he and his partner were safe, while also expressing concern over the whereabouts of his cat Bobo, who had vanished during the family’s evacuation. Luckily, Van Dyke later shared that both his home and his cat were recovered intact.
Van Dyke announced on December 12 that Bobo was located immediately upon returning home this morning. Due to the high concern over his disappearance, Animal Control was brought in for assistance. However, we’re relieved to say that Bobo was found unscathed and without difficulty.
Wildfires Have Ravaged Parts of Hollywood
Many other residents of Malibu, including Van Dyke, Jane Seymour, Mira Sorvino, Cher, and even Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, followed a similar course of action. On Instagram, Hamil shared about the fires, saying, “We’re on lockdown due to the Malibu fires. Stay safe everyone! Being confined at home aligns perfectly with my old-timer lifestyle.
On December 9th, a wildfire broke out close to Pepperdine University and was fueled by gusty Santa Ana winds reaching up to 90 mph. This resulted in over 40,000 power outages in the Malibu region, as reported by ABC News. The fire has destroyed numerous homes and damaged others, but thankfully there have been no reported deaths or injuries.
A group of volunteers from our local fire department, who have selflessly prepared for defending against forest fires, has teamed up with the 1,900 firefighters sent by CalFire to combat the current inferno. However, authorities predict that it might take several more days before the blaze is entirely extinguished. Moreover, there’s a growing concern that the likelihood of even more destructive wildfires in Hollywood will escalate as global temperatures persistently increase. This can be mitigated if we aggressively implement planned burns, reduce carbon emissions, and adopt clean energy alternatives.
Van Dyke’s week has been quite hectic following the release of his music video collaboration with Coldplay titled “All My Love.” In this video, at the age of 98, Van Dyke can be seen singing, dancing, and contemplating his life’s work alongside his family members and singer Chris Martin.
