Masaba Gupta reveals reason behind mom Neena Gupta stopping her from becoming actor: ‘You have this look which is very…’

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for personal narratives, I find Masaba Gupta‘s journey incredibly inspiring. Her unique perspective, stemming from her rich lineage and life experiences, resonates deeply with me. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that parental advice, while often well-intentioned, may not always align with our dreams and aspirations.

Masaba Gupta, the fashion designer turned actress from the streaming series Masaba Masaba, disclosed that her mother, renowned actress Neena Gupta, initially discouraged her from delving into acting due to concerns about her unique appearance. According to Masaba, Neena warned her, “You possess a distinctive look, one that is artistic, global, and almost not typically Indian. You’ll be confined in a category.

In the captivating world of Beauty Banter Podcast, I found myself utterly engrossed as Masaba Gupta shared insights into her mother Neena Gupta’s viewpoint about the film industry. She elucidated that her mom felt the market forces would impose limitations on her acting potential. Reminiscing about a pivotal moment in my life, I recalled voicing my aspiration to join Anupam Kher’s acting school situated next to SNDT College in Mumbai. My mother, with an unwavering tone, cautioned me against it, saying, “You shouldn’t even entertain the thought. You see, you possess a look that is distinctly artistic, global, and somewhat non-Indian. They’ll put you in a box.

Masaba shared that her mother warned her about potential challenges in the movie business. Instead of pursuing it, she recommended focusing on something mentally stimulating that would offer a long-term career path. Spotting SNDT College nearby, her mother suggested considering enrollment since applications were being accepted at the time. Following the advice, she applied, completed the required paperwork, and was eventually accepted, receiving an invitation to take the entrance exam a week later due to her impressive test scores.

She pointed out as well that nepotism isn’t confined to the film industry alone, but rather spreads across numerous professions. She observed that this practice is commonplace in various fields, where children of professionals such as lawyers or doctors often enter their respective careers due to parental influence and recommendations. This occurrence isn’t unique to India; it’s a global concern. Although she conceded that nepotism can impact opportunities within Bollywood, she stressed that this is just a manifestation of societal norms and is more prominent in public sectors compared to others.

In January 2023, Masaba Gupta – a well-known figure herself as the daughter of iconic actress Neena Gupta and cricket legend Vivian Richards from the West Indies – tied the knot with actor Satyadeep Mishra. A delightful piece of news came in April when the couple announced they are expecting their first child together.
