Mask Around is the sequel to one of the strangest roguelikes of all time

  • Mask Around is the sequel to 2020’s Mask Up
  • This time you’ll be running and gunning as well as brawling
  • The eponymous yellow ooze makes a return, along with some strange new twists on the formulae

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for the bizarre and unconventional, I must say that Mask Around has piqued my interest like no other game has in quite some time! Having dabbled in the original Mask Up back in 2020, I can attest to its unique blend of platforming, roguelike elements, and gooey goodness. But Mask Around takes it to a whole new level by adding shooting mechanics to the mix!

Back in 2020, I remember diving into an unusual game titled “Mask Up” right here on this site. It was a quirky roguelike platformer where you started as a simple puddle of yellow goo and eventually morphed into a muscular blob of it. If you were craving more of the strange and wonderful, I’ve got great news! The developer Rouli has brought back the weirdness with the sequel, “Mask Around”.

Unlike the initial game “Mask Up,” which primarily functioned as a 2D roguelike brawler, the new version, titled “Mask Around,” incorporates 2D shooting elements. In this iteration, you’ll find that your goo abilities aren’t your sole means of action; instead, you can switch between strategies. You can either dash through levels while firing or don the mask and engage in hand-to-hand combat with your enemies.

But of course, just like before this all-important yellow ooze is in short supply, and you’ll need to keep an eye on the meter to make sure you don’t run dry, especially in boss battles.

We all wear masks

Currently, you can download Mask Around from Google Play. As for an iOS version, we don’t have any updates yet. Since I haven’t played the original game, I can’t compare directly, but from what I see, Mask Around appears to be a genuine advancement of the formula, preserving the core gameplay while significantly broadening its scope.

As a gamer, I’m no longer just about maintaining my energy bar; I need to strategize on when and how to utilize it effectively. And let’s not forget the importance of having backup weapons for self-defense in case my ammo runs out. To top it off, the game has been given a visual upgrade, making it even more enjoyable to play.
