Mass Effect Got One — Now Give Dragon Age Its Remaster, BioWare

As a dedicated fan, hearing all this buzz about Oblivion getting a remaster leaves me yearning for BioWare to invest the same amount of passion and care into the Dragon Age series. I can’t help but wonder, when will we see a Dragon Age remaster, BioWare?

I’ve never experienced an Elder Scrolls game up until now, so I decided to join the bandwagon of the Oblivion Remastered – to get a sense of the excitement surrounding it. However, my first deep dive into a massive fantasy role-playing game wasn’t courtesy of Bethesda; it was BioWare who introduced me to this world.

The years around the 2000s were an extraordinary period for video games. Masterpieces such as Fallout 3, Portal, and BioShock dominated that epoch. However, what really captured my gaming experience from that time was discovering Dragon Age, starting with Origins – a series I never thought I would grow fond of.

My Time As a Grey Warden

The initial launch of “Dragon Age: Origins” made me feel like stepping into a realm I yearned to be part of, despite its being an actual hell on earth. The world of Thedas is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is bone-chillingly terrifying: Darkspawn, dragons, and alluring sorceresses ready to dismember you lurk around every corner.

I greatly relished my adventure as a Grey Warden and the eventual savior of Ferelden. The narrative, the high stakes, and my companions such as Leliana, Alistair, and especially Varric, made the challenges more manageable. Origin was indeed my initial experience of what many view as the spiritual successor to Divinity: Original Sin or Baldur’s Gate. However, it leans heavily towards real-time combat rather than turn-based strategy.

Where Is The Remaster?

Given that BioWare is primarily concentrating on the next Mass Effect game at the moment, there’s a bit of apprehension surrounding another Dragon Age project, especially considering the mixed reviews for The Veilguard. Despite my personal enjoyment of The Veilguard, it didn’t manage to gain much traction beyond the dedicated fanbase.

The positive aspect is that BioWare has admitted the potential for a revamped version of the game, much like their Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. However, unfortunately, there hasn’t been any fresh information regarding a remake of Dragon Age: Origins since rumors about it surfaced approximately a year ago.

Unfortunately, there are challenges in bringing back Origins given its use of an outdated game engine. Additionally, it’s important to acknowledge that BioWare, while once a dominant force, isn’t as strong as it used to be, with fewer experienced developers remaining on the team.

The Copium & Hopium

Though things might not look promising right now, I’m choosing to keep my spirits high. Perhaps we’ll get a chance to see the Dragon Age remaster in the future. It could be rebuilt using Frostbite or reimagined with Unreal Engine 5; time will tell. There seems to be an increasing demand for classic games remastered, and Dragon Age should definitely have a place in that discussion.

In terms of practicality, it’s more probable that we’ll witness remastered or remade versions of Inquisition or even Dragon Age II. However, Origins seems like an unattainable wish at the moment, unless by some extraordinary turn of events, Andraste herself intervenes to grant us devoted fans such a blessing.
