It seems that Mass Effect 4 might not require Shepard anymore, as suggested by Andromeda, although it didn’t quite achieve its goal. A new main character should step up to guide the galaxy towards a new horizon – someone other than the Ryder characters.
Grand Science Fiction Scale
The Mass Effect series doesn’t shy away from its expansive science fiction scope. As the storyline unfolds, new ideas and potentialities may surpass the initial three games. Although we can’t predict where the story might lead, as a sequel, we might witness humanity and various alien species joining forces to elevate the Milky Way into a Type 3.0 civilization. If mastered, the Mass Relays could have the power to change the galaxy entirely.
If we accept that the Reapers were indeed destroyed, as suggested by the ‘Destroy’ ending, then it’s possible that the galaxy might experience a time of tranquility while healing from the aftermath of their devastating invasion.
One question still unexplored is the enigma surrounding the creatures known as the Leviathans, initially presented in the Leviathan expansion pack of Mass Effect 3. While we understand that the Reapers were artificial beings crafted and transformed into rogue AIs, it appears that the Leviathans are their creators. The upcoming game could delve into this intriguing mystery.
Complex Choices
Beyond its memorable characters and captivating science fiction aspects, the role-playing game (RPG) quality of Mass Effect shines, particularly due to the impact of player choices. The series’ power lies in how decisions made in each installment accumulate over three games, leading to substantial consequences at crucial points.
