As a seasoned gamer of life’s rollercoaster, I must say that CBS has been spinning a tale as captivating as any epic quest in my favorite RPG. The revival of Matlock, a series I fondly remember from my childhood, has left me utterly enthralled.
CBS has delivered a swift, and positive, verdict on its first-year drama Matlock.
The television network has announced that they will be producing a second season for the series, following the airing of only two episodes. This legal drama, featuring Kathy Bates in a modern adaptation of the 1980s-90s classic, has proven to be popular in its initial broadcasts. The premiere on September 22, which came after an NFL doubleheader and 60 Minutes, attracted 7.73 million viewers on the same day, making it CBS’ best series debut in over half a decade; when accounting for cross-platform viewing over three days, this number increased to 10.67 million.
Following a break of several weeks, the second episode of ‘Matlock’ aired on October 17, returning to its usual Thursday slot. This broadcast attracted 6.38 million viewers, representing a 44% increase compared to the average viewership during the same timeframe in the previous season.
Jennie Snyder Urman came up with an innovative take on the show Matlock, complete with a shocking plot twist that left us all in awe. When we saw the first episode, brought to vibrant life by the exceptional Kathy Bates, we knew we had something truly unique. The response from viewers and critics has been phenomenal, leaving us eager to move forward with a second season.” (CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement)
For the 2023-24 television schedule, the show “Matlock” was created and secured a series order in May of that year. Due to last year’s writers’ strikes causing many scripted shows to air during winter or spring, CBS decided to postpone the series until the 2024-25 season instead. This upcoming season will consist of 18 episodes.
Bates mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that she was contemplating semi-retirement, until she stumbled upon the Matlock script. However, the opportunity to portray the lead character, an attorney who hasn’t worked in years but finds employment at a major New York law firm (while concealing a secret that forms the central mystery of the series premiere), was too intriguing for her to resist.
It’s astonishing; we’re constantly checking to make sure we’re not dreaming,” Bates expressed. “The team and the cast are thrilled. Everyone says such things when promoting a show, but this is truly unique compared to anything I’ve encountered before. Frankly, it’s hard for me to comprehend all of this, especially given my advanced years.
Joining Bates in the series are Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis. Recurring cast members include Beau Bridges, Sam Anderson, Eme Ikwuakor, and Aaron D. Harris.
CBS Studios is responsible for creating the TV show “Matlock”. The series was developed by Urman (known for “Jane the Virgin”) who also serves as an executive producer alongside Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen, Kat Coiro, and Bates.
