As a passionate gamer and a big fan of classic TV shows, I’m thrilled about the upcoming reboot of Matlock. Kathy Bates is an amazingly talented actress, and her portrayal of Matty Matlock sounds intriguing. The fact that she’ll be working at a prestigious law firm and using her experience to win cases while exposing corruption around her feels like a perfect blend of drama and mystery.
The upcoming Matlock reboot on CBS has received some exciting new information. Back in 2023, it was announced that Kathy Bates would headline the cast for the revival of Matlock, the cherished mystery show from 1986 to 1995 which originally starred Andy Griffith. The series was already scheduled to be included in CBS’s Fall 2024 program lineup. However, now, the show has been formally given a premiere date – it will debut on Sunday, September 22.
Instead of “However, this is a special premiere date as the show will be slotted into the Thursday night lineup, beginning with a rerun of its premiere on Thursday, October 10, at 9 PM ET,” you could say:
CBS’s new fall lineup was announced via a Paramount press release. Thursday nights on the network also feature the return of Elsbeth, which will follow Matlock and begin at 10 PM ET. However, Matlock is one of many new series coming to CBS on Thursday nights. The latest show in The Big Bang Theory universe, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, will kick off CBS’s Thursday night primetime lineup at 8 PM ET, followed by Ghosts at 8:30.
Matlock was originally planned to come back during the 2023 TV season, but its return was postponed due to the industry-wide Hollywood strikes that took place in 2023. In its place, CBS will introduce a new take on an old concept with the return of Hollywood Squares. Drew Barrymore is set to host this revamped game show, which will air every Wednesday at 10 PM Eastern Time, starting in January 2025.
Matlock is a Reimagining of the Original Program
In a new take on the classic “Matlock” series, Kathy Bates stars as the titular character, Matty Matlock, who, in her later years, decides to rejoin the workforce at a distinguished law firm. Leveraging her vast experience, humble exterior, and clever tactics honed over time, she manages to secure victories in court while unearthing corrupt activities in the process. Executive producing this project alongside Bates are Joanna Klein, Kat Coiro, Eric Christian Olsen, John Will, and Jenny Snyder Urman.
In the new take on the classic legal series, Skye P. Marshall is introduced as Olympia, a dedicated senior attorney at the law firm with a strong desire for justice. Joining the cast is Jason Ritter, who plays Julian, Olympia’s former spouse and the firm’s youngest heir, headed by his father. David Del Rio portrays Billy, and Leah Lewis embodies Sarah, two ambitious young associates collaborating with the seasoned Matlock to tackle various cases. The new production is distinct from the original, meaning Ben Matlock and any other characters from the previous series will not make appearances in this alternate universe.
Dean Hargrove is the brain behind the creation of “Matlock,” a TV show that saw a new lease on life for Andy Griffith. Following his tenure as Andy Taylor in “The Andy Griffith Show” in Mayberry, Griffith took on the role of Ben Matlock in this series. The original cast included Linda Purl, Julie Sommars, Clarence Gilyard Jr., Daniel Roebuck, Kene Holliday, and Nancy Stafford.
All nine seasons are free on Pluto TV for anyone wishing to relive the original
Matlock.
