Matt Damon Teases Possible ‘Rounders’ Sequel: “All of Us Want to Do It”

As a gamer with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of classics, and one that stands out is definitely “Rounders”. Matt Damon‘s recent comments about a potential sequel have got me all-in!

Matt Damon is fully committed to the idea of creating a follow-up to the 1998 poker-themed drama film, “Rounders,” which he starred in.

On Wednesday, I was a guest on The Rich Eisen Show on Roku Channel, and the host asked me about potential sequels to some of my own films. I mentioned that my production company, Actors Equity which I founded with Ben Affleck, is involved in the upcoming The Accountant 2, featuring Ben. As for my personal projects, I expressed a strong desire to revisit the world of John Dahl’s Rounders, a movie centered around underground high-stakes poker tournaments that also starred Edward Norton, John Turturro, John Malkovich, and Gretchen Mol.

“For quite some time now, we’ve been discussing it, and recently I ran into Edward Norton, a project that everyone is eager to carry out – is a sequel to ‘Rounders’. Given the significant changes in the poker world over the past 25 years, it would be intriguing to revisit those characters,” Damon stated. “It’d be fun to see how they’ve fared.”

It seems there’s a complication regarding ownership rights for the movie Miramax Films released on September 11, 1998. As the star explained, “It’s about sorting out the legal chain of ownership and identifying who has control over it. Everyone seems to have a claim, so we need to find a solution that benefits everyone, especially our cast and crew, as they are our main concern at Artists Equity. We’re working on finding a fair deal for everyone involved because I believe many of us would like to collaborate again.”

15 to 20 years back, I reminisce about my conversations with screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman, who later created the Showtime series “Billions.” Back then, they had an idea brewing for a sequel. However, given how much the real-life poker scene has transformed in recent times, I believe a refresh might be necessary to make the sequel concept feel fresh and engaging.

“Looking back 10 years, I believe what they had was amazing. I’m confident that if they adapted it to our current times and updated it, they could create something extraordinary,” he added.

Damon, who’s currently marketing his character in Apple’s “The Instigators,” noted that while Rounders didn’t do well at the box office initially, it has since garnered a dedicated following of fans.

He remarked, “That film is the type which initially underperformed at the box office.” Upon its release, it seemed to flop, yet found appreciation among viewers over time. This discovery often fosters a sense of belonging among fans, as they take pride in saying, ‘This is my movie; I supported it even when it was overlooked.’ As a result, there’s an abundance of goodwill associated with it. However, we need to determine if we can make it successful again.”
