As a die-hard fan of the Dark Knight, I am thrilled to hear that Matt Reeves has finally given us a glimpse into the future of ‘The Batman – Part II.’ After years of speculation and anticipation, it’s reassuring to know that we won’t have to wait too much longer for another thrilling chapter in Gotham City.
Following years of anticipation, fans now have insight into when the production for “The Batman – Part II” might commence and whether it can meet its proposed 2026 release date. Since “The Batman” graced the big screen in March 2022, enthusiasts have been yearning for a sequel, and while HBO’s “The Penguin” served as an enjoyable prelude, “The Batman – Part II” still seems like a distant prospect. Recently, director Matt Reeves has shared encouraging news that sheds light on the continuation of The Dark Knight’s journey.
In a chat with Zoë Kravitz, star of The Batman, for Variety about her directorial project Blink Twice, Reeves subtly hinted at the progress of The Batman – Part II. He shared, “We’re wrapping up the script and we plan to start filming next year,” with production slated to begin in 2025. Moreover, he disclosed that discussions are ongoing for additional seasons of The Penguin. “We’re discussing with [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about another season,” he mentioned.
The sequel to “The Batman,” titled “The Batman – Part II,” is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, which gives a potential production timeline starting in 2025 if filming begins then. Originally slated for an October 3, 2025 release, the movie was postponed earlier this year to provide more time for script development by director Matt Reeves. As of now, there’s no information available about the sequel, but with a possible 2025 filming start date, casting announcements may soon be made public.
Will ‘The Batman – Part II’ Become Part of the DCU?
The current question circulating among fans is whether Matt Reeves’ “The Batman – Part II” will maintain its unique timeline or merge into James Gunn’s upcoming DCU. Although “The Batman” and “The Penguin,” as well as other characters like those in “Creature Commandos” or the forthcoming “Superman,” appear to inhabit separate universes, some fans hypothesize that the original blueprints for Reeves’ Batman and Gunn’s “Brave and the Bold” may have evolved. At present, Reeves is engaged in two distinct DCU-based Batman projects: Mike Flanagan’s “Clayface” movie and the animated film “Dynamic Duo,” which will center around Dick Grayson and Jason Todd Robin.
Title “Clayface” is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026, three weeks before “The Batman Part II.” Despite expectations of a delay for “The Batman Part II,” it appears to be proceeding as planned. If “The Batman Part II” were delayed until 2027, there would be a five-year gap between the original film and its sequel. This lengthy wait is similar to the eight years that elapsed between when Robert Pattinson was initially cast as Batman and the release of his first movie, compared to the period between Christian Bale’s initial casting in “Batman Begins” and the launch of “The Dark Knight Rises.” As Reeves focuses on refining the script for “The Batman” sequel, fans can take comfort in knowing that enough time will be dedicated to ensuring its quality.
