Recently, Matt Smith discussed a widely circulated idea among fans regarding “House of the Dragon.” Enthusiasts of the “Game of Thrones” universe are eagerly waiting for the debut of two upcoming series: “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and “House of Dragon’s third season,” which is projected to air in 2026. The ending of season 2 and the numerous alterations made while adapting George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” book have led to an increase in unusual theories about “House of the Dragon.” One such theory proposes that Daemon Targaryen might transform into the Three-Eyed Raven.
As a fervent admirer, I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Smith, the captivating actor behind Daemon Targaryen in the mesmerizing fantasy prequel series. When asked about the Three-Eyed Raven theory, he playfully responded, “I hope it’s true. That’s a clever one, I like it.” This fan theory links to his intriguing scene at the end of season 2, where he had visions of the future at Harrenhal’s weirwood tree, even catching a glimpse of the future Three-Eyed Raven. While Smith’s response doesn’t definitively confirm anything, it does hint at his appreciation for the tantalizing possibility of such an unusual twist in his character’s storyline.
What Matt Smith’s Comment About The Daemon Theory Means
Daemon Likely Isn’t The Three-Eyed Raven
The idea that Daemon Targaryen could be the Three-Eyed Raven is intriguing and entertaining to consider, but it appears unlikely. It seems highly improbable that George R.R. Martin intended this twist, and even though “House of the Dragon” might steer his narrative in a new direction for the TV universe, such an outcome would create numerous unresolved questions and, most significantly, would not align with Daemon’s role in the Dance of the Dragons or his character development.
As a movie critic, I must say that Matt Smith’s portrayal of Daemon Targaryen has been a captivating yet morally ambiguous character on the screen, largely due to Smith’s compelling performance. In past interviews, it appears that Smith isn’t deeply versed in the intricate lore of ASOIAF, and his response here suggests he was unaware of this particular theory. Given this information, it’s safe to assume that this theory hasn’t influenced Smith’s work for season 3. While the theory itself is intriguing, I find it hard to believe and worry that its inclusion would feel forced or out of place.
Our Take On Daemon Being The Three-Eyed Raven
This Would Be An Awful Ending For Matt Smith’s Character
In the first season of “House of the Dragon,” Daemon and King Viserys were portrayed with a captivating contrast. As the story unfolded in season 2, it utilized the Harrenhal vision sequences to depict Daemon grappling with his brother’s demise. Although there were magical aspects to the tale, it was the deep, human feelings that truly hooked viewers. These scenes would have logically continued Daemon’s storyline in season 2, enabling him to reconnect with Rhaenyra. However, he discovered what he sought in a weirwood tree instead.
I’m fully supportive of “House of the Dragon” delving into the enigmatic, supernatural aspects of “ASOIAF” that were absent in “Game of Thrones.” However, I prefer these elements to complement rather than dictate the characters’ journeys, as a Deus Ex Machina might. For instance, Daemon was on a course for organic development, and I hope this won’t be disrupted by an unexpected supernatural element that drastically changes his arc, steering him towards becoming the Three-Eyed Raven – a character not directly associated with “House of the Dragon.
