Mattel Sued Over Mistakenly Printing URL for Pornographic Site on ‘Wicked’ Dolls Packaging

As a seasoned gamer and parent of two young daughters, I find myself deeply troubled by Mattel’s recent blunder. Having grown up with toys from this iconic company, I never imagined that a simple purchase could lead to such an unsettling experience for my child.

A lawsuits collectively brought by a group of people has been initiated against Mattel, due to an incident where the company unintentionally placed the URL of an adult content website on the packaging of their limited edition Wicked dolls.

A South Carolina resident initiated a lawsuit, claiming it was triggered when she bought a toy for her child, who later accessed an adult-rated website following a mix-up with the URL for a Wicked doll. Instead of directing to the correct film site, the toy company had mistakenly printed a similar web address linked to the adult-entertainment company, Wicked Pictures. The plaintiff argues that Mattel declined to issue a refund and asserts that her child experienced “emotional distress” due to this error, leading them unintentionally to visit a pornographic site.

The court documents state, “The images contained within this product were explicit, full-frontal nude scenes of sexual intercourse. Upon seeing these photographs, the plaintiff’s daughter quickly showed her mother, leaving both shocked by their contents. Had the plaintiff known about this inappropriate flaw in the product, she would not have made a purchase. When Mattel discovered their error, they promptly removed the toy from all stores. In their statement, Mattel acknowledged a typo on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which was meant to guide consumers to the official WickedMovie.com website. Mattel recommended that those who purchased it either throw away the product packaging or cover up the link.
