As a cinephile who has seen my fair share of both blockbusters and flops, I must admit that Matthew McConaughey‘s filmography is as diverse as it gets. However, there are some films that even the most ardent fans tend to overlook, and ‘Tiptoes’ seems to be one such movie for the talented actor.
Every actor, including Matthew McConaughey, has a film in their career that is often overlooked and quickly forgotten. In fact, even before he became a big star, McConaughey had already acted in an obscure movie called “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation” in 1994. Interestingly, he also appeared in another largely ignored flop released the same year as one of his major hits, the romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Now, over two decades later, McConaughey has finally seen the trailer for “Tiptoes” for the first time, and he’s sharing his thoughts on this politically incorrect dramedy.
On the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, McConaughey was introduced to the trailer for the film Tiptoes by hosts Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer. During the clip, Segura pointed out that when people see the trailer, they often believe it’s a comedy sketch because the movie’s plot is so strange. McConaughey, amused by this, replied that the film was “not quite real, but it was real.” Segura seemed to enjoy the absurdity of the situation and mentioned that he had shown the trailer to many people who were confused, thinking it was a Saturday Night Live sketch. However, Segura assured them that it was indeed a real movie.
McConaughey confesses, “I haven’t watched the movie trailer yet.” He then expresses his appreciation for it, saying, “This is fantastic.” The movie in question, which caused controversy due to Gary Oldman being cast as a little person, has become even more contentious over time. Intrigued by Oldman’s role, the trio finds amusement in the trailer’s claim that it’s “the role of a lifetime” for Oldman. As they ponder whether this is truly happening, the hosts query McConaughey about his acting approach and he delves into discussing the film’s unique premise.
“Well, this idea seemed quite unconventional at first glance. However, the skill it attracted was evident. It had an unstructured, rebellious vibe to it, yet there was a touch of sincerity that felt less sugary-sweet in the script than it did in the trailer. We knew it was a soap opera, but it felt overly cheesy, like saying, ‘This is wild!’
Tiptoes Sparked a Lot of Controversy When It Was Released
Matthew Bright wrote and directed the comedy-drama ‘Tiptoes’. The story revolves around Steven Bedalia (played by McConaughey), a man of average size, who struggles with whether to tell his pregnant fiancée Carol (Kate Beckinsale) that his family is made up of little people. This revelation could mean their unborn child may have dwarfism. In the movie, Oldman plays McConaughey’s brother, a role that sparked controversy due to his portrayal as a little person at the time of release. Alongside Oldman, the film stars Patricia Arquette, Peter Dinklage, and David Alan Grier, among others.
One might assume that not many people are familiar with this movie, given it first appeared as a 150-minute director’s cut at a modest film festival before being trimmed to a 90-minute producer’s cut without the consent of the writer and director. The filmmaker was dismissed during post-production, and it was later showcased at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival under the producer’s direction.
Critics are merciless with their reviews for the film Tiptoes: It has a dismal 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some going so far as to call it one of the worst films ever made. However, the hosts of the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave seem to hold a different opinion, with Kreischer passionately declaring, “I’d like to take credit for writing and directing that movie. Tom and I would do any film you want, without even seeing it first, as long as it’s as good as that incredible trailer.
