For the first time since the death of Matthew Perry a year ago today, members of his family are collectively sharing their thoughts. On October 28, 2023, Perry was discovered unconscious at his Los Angeles residence and later declared deceased. In the period following his passing, five individuals have been indicted, among them his personal assistant, two physicians, and two drug vendors. The official autopsy report reveals that the beloved “Friends” actor ultimately lost his life due to an overdose of ketamine, which he was using as part of his treatment for anxiety.

On the show Today, Perry’s family gathered for a discussion about his passing. Present were his mother Suzanne, sisters Caitlin, Emily, and Madeline, and his stepfather Keith Morrison from Dateline. They shared memories of him, focusing on what they miss the most. Additionally, they spoke about how his legacy continues through the establishment of The Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, an organization created to assist individuals grappling with addiction issues.

Morrison mentioned that someone named Suzanne phoned and simply stated, “Matthew’s deceased,” which was how they found out about Perry’s passing. He further explained that Perry’s legacy showed the world that no amount of wealth can heal an addict. Instead, what is required is something else, so that’s what we are striving to provide in our foundation.

He goes on to say: “We’re no different from anyone else, except for the unfortunate circumstance that we share a well-known relative who experienced hardship. People often approach us to express their condolences. However, it’s important to remember that this loss is not unique to us; countless others have endured the same. This is not about our personal situation, but rather about those millions of people who are in pain. The world is hurting, and it needs aid.

Matthew Perry Had a Big Heart

Perry was born in 1969 and spent his formative years growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada under the care of his mother Suzanne after she divorced his biological father in 1970. He later married and had Perry, who went through a rebellious phase during his teenage years, one of which involved getting into a physical altercation with Justin Trudeau, who would later become the Prime Minister of Canada, when they were both attending school together.

In simpler terms, recalling their previous talk, Perry’s mom mentioned that it seemed like he had some sense that his end was near, a feeling often shared by people looking back on the deaths of their dear ones.

Right before he passed away, he showed me one of his recently built homes and said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m overjoyed to be with you now.’ This was reminiscent of a premonition or some intuitive feeling. At the moment, I didn’t give it much thought, but I pondered, ‘When have we last had such heartfelt conversations like this? It’s been years.’

She says that even now, a year after he left this world, she still reaches for the phone sometimes to call him, which speaks to the strong bond they have in death, which the two didn’t necessarily have in life. “I’ll see something funny or something ridiculous on the news or whatever, and I go to call him. I have more freedom of a relationship with him now than I ever did. Then it hits me so hard that he’s not there.”

Regarding his sisters, Caitlin expresses that “during his tough periods, we always held our heads high with pride for him.” Emily further comments that “Perry showed immense compassion towards those he cared about, stating that he had a generous heart.

“He was grumpy all the time, but he was funny all the time, and when the people he loved succeeded, or were scared, he would do anything for you. Really, all he wanted was to love and be loved.”

Since his untimely passing, numerous celebrities and his former co-stars on “Friends” have acknowledged his large heart. Fortunately, his sudden demise has sparked something positive, as the Matthew Foundation in Canada can now begin to assist others struggling with addiction, a disease that affects millions of people annually, by funding ongoing research.
