Matthew Warchus is set to take the helm for the upcoming revival of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang“, as revealed in an announcement by EON Productions and Amazon MGM on Thursday. The new script will be penned by Edna Walsh.
Matthew Warchus is widely recognized for his work on the 2022 musical adaptation of ‘Matilda’ and the 2014 film ‘Pride’. Conor Walsh, on the other hand, has gained recognition for the upcoming project in 2024 titled ‘Small Things Like These‘.
The book “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” originally penned by Ian Fleming as a bedtime tale for his son Casper, was transformed into a screenplay in 1968 by Roald Dahl, Ken Hughes, and Richard Maibaum. This movie adaptation, now a cherished classic, featured Dick Van Dyke and was helmed by Hughes. The iconic song of the same name, composed by the Sherman Brothers, received an Academy Award nomination.
The upcoming movie is currently being worked on and was announced as such by EON and Amazon on Thursday. In the initial film, Van Dyke portrayed Caractacus Potts, a widowed inventor, along with his on-screen children, Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley). Alongside Truly Scrumptious, the heiress to the candy empire Scrumptious, Potts renovated an old car that possessed magical flight capabilities. Cubby Broccoli oversaw production, with Ken Adam handling the design aspects of the movie set.
The movie also received a Broadway adaptation in 2005, and starred Raúl Esparza as Potts.
