As someone who has spent countless hours perusing the hallowed halls of the art world, I must say, the sale of Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian” for a staggering $6.24 million USD leaves me both amused and bewildered. In a world where the price of a banana can outstrip that of many people’s annual income, it’s hard not to chuckle at the absurdity.
In a surprising turn of events at Sotheby’s New York auction under the theme “New and Contemporary Now“, a banana taped to a wall, titled “Comedian” (2019) by artist Maurizio Cattelan, became the talk of the town. This unconventional artwork sparked debates about the art market’s peculiarities and eventually fetched an astounding $6.24 million USD (including buyer’s premium). Auctioneer Oliver Barker affectionately referred to it as “the world’s most expensive banana”. After a tense 10-minute bidding war, it surpassed its initial estimate of $1.5 million USD.
It was unveiled that Justin Sun, a well-known art collector and creator of the TRON cryptocurrency platform, purchased the artwork. This artwork is the second edition of “Comedian“, which gained attention at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. In the past, the three editions of this work were sold for $120,000 USD each, with the Guggenheim Museum acquiring one of them.
Sotheby’s contemporary art chairman, Grégoire Billault, likened the impact of the artwork to Marcel Duchamp’s famous piece, “Fountain” (1917). He pointed out how digital media broadened the influence of the Comedian. Although some have criticized the banana as being simple and skeptical, its record-breaking sale underscores its lasting significance as a symbol of art world extravagance.
