As a seasoned gamer of the art world, I’ve seen it all – from the grandiose masterpieces that grace the hallowed halls of museums to the quirky, thought-provoking pieces that leave you scratching your head (and your wallet). But nothing quite compares to the enigmatic journey of Maurizio Cattelan’s duct-taped banana artwork, “Comedian.
Maurizio Cattelan’s duct-taped banana artwork has reappeared as if it had never gone away. The provocative piece titled “Comedian” (2019) initially puzzled spectators at Art Basel Miami Beach. As one of three editions, the first two were snapped up swiftly for an astounding $120,000 USD through Perrotin, and then its price increased slightly to $150,000 USD to a buyer connected to the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
The comedian has experienced multiple transformations since that time, with various instances of being consumed. First, a New York-based performance artist named David Datuna, and later in 2023, a South Korean student who claimed it was part of their performance art, both consumed the comedian under artistic pretenses.
According to Cattelan, “Comedian” wasn’t just a joke for him; instead, it was a heartfelt critique and reflection on our values. At art fairs, where pace and commerce dominate, he viewed it as an opportunity. If he had to be at a fair, he could sell a banana like others sell their artworks. This way, he could participate within the system but with his own set of rules.
The ongoing Comedian storyline now includes a fresh development: an upcoming auction at Sotheby’s New York branch, attracting both art enthusiasts and mischief-makers. With an estimated value between $1 million and $1.5 million USD, this artwork will make its rounds in ten international cities before being sold during The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction, from November 8 to 20.
