Max's Harley Quinn Is Changing Things Up For Season 5, And I Love That It'll Address A Big Gotham City Question I've Always Had

As a long-time DC Comics enthusiast and avid gamer, I must say that the upcoming fifth season of Harley Quinn has me positively giddy with anticipation. The thought of our favorite chaotic duo, Harley and Poison Ivy, taking a break from Gotham’s grime and exploring the glitz and glamour of Metropolis is a tantalizing prospect.

Among the highly anticipated DC television series due out later, it’s understandable that many fans rank Colin Farrell’s villainous comeback in HBO’s “The Penguin” at the top. Indeed, the Batman spinoff is truly remarkable. However, we should also keep an eye on other releases scheduled for the Fall of 2024 and the 2025 premiere season, including the fifth season of “Harley Quinn”.

It’s been over a year now since Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell lent their voices to the somewhat villainous couple Harley and Poison Ivy in Season 4, and they made a brief appearance in the spinoff “Kite Man: Hell Yeah”. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how things unfold after the explosive finale “Killer’s Block”, which came close to shattering the moon and introduced the Gotham City Sirens.

In a chat with ComicBook.com, co-creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker disclosed some fresh insights regarding the major transformation happening in Season 5. However, they didn’t specify the exact timeline when viewers will witness this change on streaming platforms. Here’s how Schumacker introduced it:

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got some exclusive insider info: There’s been a tantalizing sneak peek dropped at Comic-Con that hints at Season 5 being heavily set in Metropolis. My buddies Harley and Ivy are shaking things up in their love life by opting for a fresh change of scenery!

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Max & Co. hinted at the location change for Season 5 of their show, yet with relatively little extra information provided. However, it seems that Harley and Ivy won’t be simply leaving Superman’s hometown for a break; instead, the creative team plans to delve into an idea that has intrigued me as a longtime reader of DC Comics: why is Gotham City often portrayed as being so much more troubled than Metropolis?

In this piece, Justin Halpern discusses why the change in location serves as an opportunity for him to delve into the dramatic contrasts between Superman’s Metropolis and Batman’s Gotham City.

It could be rephrased as follows: Our curiosity lies in the notion that Metropolis is perpetually depicted as a radiant city on a hill, while Gotham seems to be in a constant state of disorder, almost serving as a support system for Metropolis’s prosperity. In other words, we find this concept intriguing.

In a boisterous and exaggerated manner, Harley Quinn delves into almost every aspect of Batman’s lore and more, leading me to anticipate that the series will satirically critique the social and economic landscapes of the two cities with equal wit and incisiveness. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing how they portray the vast differences between the cities as depicted in various sources.

Seldomly does the writing for DC comics depict Gotham City as a glitzy or glamorous location during the Bat-Family’s exploits. Instead, it’s typically when Bruce Wayne attends galas and charity events that we glimpse the more affluent parts of the city. However, the majority of the stories unfold in perilous locales teeming with villains – from Crime Alley to the Narrows and countless underground sewer systems.

On the opposite side of the comic book coin lies Metropolis, frequently depicted as a “city of the future” that Superman protects from impending disasters. Here, even notorious villains like Lex Luthor, who is a mega-rich tycoon, strive to make this city technologically superior to others. It’s hard to believe that Superman needs to depart from Metropolis to save so many other places, yet his hometown remains remarkably untouched by the dirt and decay that Gotham City endures.

I’m eagerly anticipating what happens next in Harley Quinn and Ives’ storyline as Harley Quinn Season 5 is set to premiere on Max. Reports suggest that some episodes may air before the year ends.
