Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig Were Also Up for Emmys at the Same Time 12 Years Ago

As a longtime fan who’s witnessed their comedic brilliance unfold over the years, I must say that Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig are the dynamic duo of laughter. From their hilarious sketches on Saturday Night Live to their recent Emmy-nominated performances, these two women have consistently left me in stitches.

Apart from sharing the same comedic roots on Saturday Night Live, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig have been nominated this year in the outstanding actress in a comedy series category. Maya Rudolph is recognized for her role in Loot, while Kristen Wiig has earned a nod for Palm Royale, both shows airing on Apple TV+.

Prior to their fame with scripted series, this pair often left audiences and occasionally even fellow actors laughing uncontrollably on NBC’s enduring sketch comedy show. Notably, when Rudolph came back to Saturday Night Live (having departed in 2007) to host the February 18, 2012 episode, she along with cast members Wiig and Hader found it challenging to maintain their composure during the spoof of “The Price Is Right,” titled “Super Showcase.”

Rudolph and Wiig portray bungling spokespeople Shonda and Vonda, who distribute prizes while the game show host (Hader) and contestant (Vanessa Bayer) observe. One prize consists of a lifetime supply of frozen chicken, as Wiig and Rudolph unfurl a frozen bird, with Wiig struggling not to break character to exclaim: “If your man enjoys chicken, he might appreciate Chicken Man!” The skit concludes with Vonda pursuing Shonda in an unruly golf cart before crashing through the backdrop and speeding offstage.

“Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, seemed genuinely excited and pleased that I had the opportunity to host before Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg departed,” Rudolph expressed to THR following her guest actress Emmy nomination for the episode. That evening, there was a palpable sense of joy radiating from everyone present.”

For the past 12 years, Wiig and Rudolph have together amassed many Emmy nominations, with Rudolph receiving five victories. Moreover, their reappearances as hosts on Studio 8H during SNL’s season 49 also landed them individual Emmy nominations this year for exceptional guest actress in a comedy series.

“On the Comedy Actress Roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter in May, Rudolph stated that her time at Saturday Night Live has provided a groundbreaking foundation. She explained that this experience equips one with skills akin to combat in comedy, which can be applied anywhere.”

As a lifelong fan of The Hollywood Reporter, I was thrilled when I stumbled upon this intriguing story in their August stand-alone issue. I recall the days when I used to eagerly wait for the magazine to arrive at my doorstep, and now, here I am, reading it online! If you’re not already a subscriber, I highly recommend signing up to never miss out on such captivating stories. Trust me, it’s worth every penny.
