As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for witty narratives and engaging characters, I can’t help but feel drawn into this delightful tug-of-war between Paris and Rome over Emily in Paris. Having grown up on a diet of classic Italian cinema and French New Wave films, it feels nostalgic to witness two iconic cities battling it out for the affection of a beloved character, much like the eternal rivalry between our beloved video game characters.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri of Rome has a statement for President Emmanuel Macron of France: “It’s simply not appropriate to try and intimidate or meddle with Netflix’s plans for the next season of Emily in Paris. It’s just not how things are done,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter Roma.
On a somewhat irritated note, Gualtieri, who professes his affection for Paris and maintains close ties with Anne Hidalgo, its Mayor, found himself displeased on Wednesday morning. This was after President Macron revealed to Variety his intentions to vigorously oppose the potential permanent relocation of Emily from the City of Lights to Rome, otherwise known as The Eternal City.
Netflix has openly stated that character Emily is set to spend some time in Rome-like surroundings during the fifth season. However, it seems that the French national pride represented by President Macron has suffered a potentially fatal blow.
On Wednesday, I shared that my spouse and I have a soft spot for this popular series. In fact, last September, our beloved Brigitte, the First Lady, graced the screen in a brief appearance on one of its episodes. During her cameo, Madame Macron was spotted dining at the same restaurant in Paris as Emily. Their paths crossed, and they took a memorable selfie together. When Emily expressed her affection for France, my country responded warmly: “And France adores you, Emily.
President Macron expressed great pride in his spouse and elaborated that the program itself has a highly beneficial impact on the nation’s appeal… it’s an excellent, forward-moving endeavor.
When questioned about his strategy for convincing Emily to come back from Rome to Paris, Macron’s response echoed Churchill’s spirit. “We will put up a strong fight,” the French President declared. “We are asking them to stay in Paris! It’s illogical for Emily to be in Paris in Rome.
Dear @EmmanuelMacaron, you seem relaxed: Emily is doing well in Rome. And as they say, one cannot command the heart: let her make her own choice 🙂

Initially taken aback, the Mayor of Rome later chuckled at Emmanuel Macron’s Macron Doctrine concerning Emily Cooper’s fate. He initially responded to the disagreement through a tweet: “Relax, Emmanuel Macron. Emily in Rome fits just right.
Then he got on the phone with THR Roma and he told us what he really thinks.
Mayor Gualtieri pondered if there were more urgent issues for President Macron. He hopes Macron was merely joking, as it seems unreasonable to assume that a company like Netflix would comply with instructions from government leaders or let political influence dictate their decisions.
The Rome mayor went on to say, “There might be several more urgent concerns for the French president. For instance, conflicts are ongoing in Ukraine and the Middle East, a devastating hurricane has struck America and is connected to climate change, and there are other European affairs that likely take precedence over Emily, I suspect.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm when I say that the notion of Emily residing in Italy feels incredibly fitting from our perspective here in Rome. It’s as if this decision underscores the growing significance of our city on a global scale. We, the residents of Rome, find comfort in Netflix’s production choices, knowing they possess the expertise to make such decisions. Frankly speaking, I believe President Macron would do well to unwind and let things unfold naturally.
Gualtieri mentioned he had a conversation about Macron’s unconventional statement with Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris. According to him, they shared a laugh over Macron. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Paris gave THR Roma permission to share that they indeed talked about Emily in Paris with Gualtieri. The Paris mayor stated they shared a laugh on the matter. “We had a good chuckle,” said the mayor. “I have fondness for Rome, and we are both cities that stand out uniquely,” she concluded.
