As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for entertainment industry dynamics, I find Zeinab Abu Alsamh‘s journey inspiring. Her relentless pursuit of excellence and her unwavering commitment to empowering emerging talent is truly commendable.
Before her employment at Saudi Arabia’s MBC Group in the year 2021, Zeinab Abu Alsamh – one of The Hollywood Reporter‘s most powerful women in international television for 2024 – held the position of chief commercial officer at the Saudi Broadcasting Authority. In this role, she managed the programming strategies for their entire broadcast collection.
At MBC Studios, an internal unit that produces high-quality content for MBC Group, her responsibilities include overseeing project production and development, along with spearheading new initiatives. Additionally, she holds the position of CEO at MBC Academy, where she identifies and fosters budding talent.
She explains that during the previous year, we made internal changes to better cater to the market and give more power to those who possess the necessary skills. Notably, our most significant accomplishment over this period was graduating 23,000 trainees from our programs – a feat we are immensely proud of.
What was your first job in the business?
Initially, I started my career in the field of advertising, specifically as an account executive. Over time, this role transformed into a strategic planner position. In this capacity, I was tasked with comprehending consumer behaviors and devising ad campaigns that struck an emotional chord while meeting their practical needs. Frequently, I draw upon the insights I gained in this job to empathize with our audience and identify what stirs them. To put it simply, I cherished my initial work experience!
What was the biggest professional challenge you faced this past year?
Working in the dynamic landscape of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers a thrilling experience due to the swift transformations taking place within the country. While staying abreast of the latest trends and comprehending the narratives that resonate with our viewers may present some difficulties, I must admit that these challenges are far outweighed by my excitement. They serve as motivators for us to consistently strive to break through the noise and deliver quality content to our audience.
What do you see as your biggest achievement of the past year?
Within our organization, we dedicated the past year to reorganizing ourselves in order to provide a superior service and give more power to those with the necessary skills. Regarding MBC Academy, our most significant accomplishment was graduating 23,000 individuals from our training programs. We are exceptionally proud of each one of them.
What needs to be done to improve equality and diversity within the industry?
It’s quite remarkable that our organization boasts a significant level of diversity and female leadership. Over half of my team members are women hailing from diverse backgrounds. Yet, the struggle for women in our field often revolves around striking an ideal work-life balance. To assist with this, we provide flexible working hours, and I make it a point to establish key performance indicators that promote a healthy work-life equilibrium – a move that benefits everyone involved.
What can be identified as the most significant hurdle for women in an occupation that, despite advancements, remains predominantly male-oriented?
It’s worth noting that maintaining a balance between work and personal life remains a significant issue for many. Although we’ve seen advancements in gender diversity in our region, many women still find it challenging to juggle their professional obligations with their personal lives. Personally, I aim to help my team members by advocating for flexible working arrangements. Fortunately, MBC Group is not only open to flexible work but also actively promotes women in leadership positions.
What current industry trend do you hope to soon see the back of?
Recently, I’ve taken on the role as the leader of MBC Talent, a vital component within our organization. This sector, although young compared to others in MBC Group, offers tremendous opportunities for creating an infrastructure that keeps pace with the swift expansion of our industry. If I were to single out a topic for emphasis, it would be artificial intelligence and exploring ways we can leverage its capabilities to improve and elevate our work throughout the company.
What advice would you give young women just entering the industry?
As a dedicated gamer, I’m always eager to expand my horizons and deepen my understanding of this ever-evolving landscape. Those who keep their skills sharp and adapt readily will undoubtedly stay ahead of the game. Being versatile in my area of expertise is crucial, and my commitment to lifelong learning will certainly reap rewards.
What show, currently on air, would you love to have made?
It’s quite challenging since there are numerous options, but the realm of fantasy consistently captivates my imagination. Frequently, I ponder the possibility of crafting an extensive fantasy saga right here in Saudi Arabia.
What do you watch for pleasure?
There’s a certain comfort I find in re-watching old shows. Revisiting timeless classics offers a sense of tranquility, as I get to learn more about them without the tension of not knowing how they’ll conclude – since I already know their endings!
What do you do to unwind?
I enjoy spending quality time with my loved ones, particularly my parents. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen as frequently as I’d prefer. Yet, whenever I can, it becomes my regular choice for relaxation and rejuvenation.
