As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen more Marvel movies than I care to remember (and let me tell you, that’s saying something), I must say the latest rumors about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom have left me both excited and a tad frustrated. On one hand, the idea of RDJ reprising his iconic role as Tony Stark-turned-Doctor Doom in not just one, but two more Avengers films, is enough to make any Marvel fan’s heart race!
A recent buzz about the Marvel Cinematic Universe suggests that Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom might be the sole version we’ll watch in cinemas, possibly in upcoming Avengers films and future projects like the Fantastic Four movie centered around Galactus. However, it appears that the MCU will not explore Doctor Doom’s connection with the Fantastic Four, which might dishearten fans who anticipated Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as a lasting substitute for Jonathan Majors’ Kang.
According to industry expert DanielRPK on Twitter, Daniel Richtman revealed that after his appearance in a few MCU films, Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom, is expected to have significant roles beyond “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”. It’s been suggested that his return isn’t limited to just a few movies. However, the high cost associated with Downey Jr. and the Russo brothers doesn’t seem to deter this plan. Rumor has it that Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom is set for appearances in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and serving as the main antagonist in future Avengers films. As per Daniel Richtman, there are no current plans to replace Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom character when he eventually steps down from the role.
“The problem lies with the portrayal of Doom in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite his interactions with Reed Richards in Doomsday/Secret Wars, they have chosen to make him the main antagonist for the multiverse saga and the Avengers films. Conversely, Galactus is set as the villain for the Fantastic Four film, which implies that Doom will primarily be known as an adversary of the Avengers rather than the Fantastic Four. Given that MCU villains typically meet their end at the conclusion of their storylines, this setup leaves little room for him to become a future enemy of the Fantastic Four.
Of course, there is still a chance that somewhere down the line the MCU will eventually re-introduce Doctor Doom. However, it seems incredibly unlikely that Marvel Studios will be doing that in the next phase, nor will they be having Downey Jr. (or otherwise) play the character as the main antagonist in a Fantastic Four film. As Richtman adds, “once the saga wraps up, that’ll likely be it for him.”
The Next Avengers Villains Aren’t Just Doctor Doom
In the upcoming Avengers films and the Multiverse Saga, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will serve as the primary antagonist. However, it’s not just him who will pose a threat to Earth’s mightiest heroes. The latest rumors about “Avengers: Secret Wars” hint that the superhero team could face off against a formidable foe known as the “Multiversal Masters of Evil.” This group is said to be a fusion of characters from different timeframes, including both heroes and villains. This seems to be a replacement for the originally planned Council of Kangs, which was the initial adversary before Jonathan Majors’ departure. Although this development may not align with some fans’ expectations regarding Doctor Doom’s role in the MCU, it’s likely that he’ll be joined by alternate versions of characters such as Doctor Strange, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, and more.
In the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Doctor Doom may not serve as the primary antagonist. However, hints indicate that he’ll make an appearance, stemming from another universe. The downside is that his traditional bond with Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) won’t be depicted – a significant aspect of their comic book storyline. Despite this, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige appear committed to crafting Downey Jr.’s Doom as the definitive on-screen portrayal, aiming to create an accurate representation in this opportunity they call “getting it right.
