In the realm of Marvel’s TV content on Disney+, there have been varying successes. While shows like Loki were praised by both critics and viewers, others such as Secret Invasion didn’t quite meet expectations. The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again could be a significant boost for the streaming service, but Marvel Studios is taking extra precautions to minimize potential pitfalls. A recent report indicates that they have chosen to halt progress on several highly anticipated projects, such as the Nova series.
Deadline reports that Marvel has decided to indefinitely shelve three upcoming television projects — Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. While sources tell the trade outlet that the shows were not actually greenlit (and could still happen), they also hear that the major change in the upcoming slate comes as a result of a change in philosophy when it comes to the TV side of the MCU. Recently, Marvel Studios created the Marvel Television (sounds familiar) division, which will now oversee the production of upcoming projects. Instead of making them with a moviemaking mindset, they will now employ showrunners to handle their next series.
Unfortunately, it seems the long-awaited Nova series did not make the cut in the new slate despite getting a writer. It was rumored to feature Richard Rider, the original hero from the intergalactic police force in Marvel Comics. Meanwhile, Strange Academy was reportedly set to feature the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong (Benedict (Wong), teaching a school of young magic-wielding students in New Orleans. The Terror, Inc. show, which comes as a surprise to most fans, is based on an obscure comic character from the 90s era of Marvel Comics.
It’s Been a Long Road for ‘Nova’
Although the Nova Corps had a role in James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”, they have taken a secondary position within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A project centered around Richard Rider, a beloved character among hardcore Marvel Comic enthusiasts, has been under development for quite some time. Initially conceived as a full-length movie, this project has reportedly transformed into a series for Disney+. The absence of the character in the “Guardians” films was due to Gunn preferring not to include another human character alongside Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord (as per CBR). According to Deadline, there’s a possibility that this project could regain focus at some point, but given its lengthy development process, it wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel decides to postpone it for several years.
It’s surprising that Nova, who has been a highly favored character for fans for quite some time, hasn’t gained more attention. Actors like Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling (who’s been linked to Ghost Rider) are among those who could potentially play Richard Rider. Lately, Brandon Sklenar from It Ends With Us has also shown interest in playing Nova in the canceled streaming series. For now, it looks like we won’t see Nova in the MCU through this specific project, and given his significance, a secondary role might not fully capture his essence.
