MCU’s Fantastic Four Comic Reveals How First Steps Changes Their Origin

The newly launched Fantastic Four companion comic book sheds light on the backstory of Marvel’s original team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Starring actors Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, this quartet will first appear in the MCU with the upcoming film The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps, introducing viewers to an alternate Earth. Set four years after they acquired their powers, the comic book series has recently disclosed how the Fantastic Four came into being within the MCU.

First Steps tie-in comic reveals how Fantastic Four’s origin happens in MCU

In a one-shot comic book titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps #1”, released on stores’ shelves on July 9, the story unfolds, detailing the adventures of the main characters before the premiere of the upcoming film by Matt Shakman, called “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”.

In the movie, the Fantastic Four are already established as a team. The comic serves two purposes: it explains what has transpired in their universe up until that point and it delves into how they acquired their powers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to the comic, instead of cosmic rays, the group received their abilities after an accidental exposure to ‘celestial radiation’ during a space expedition.

In addition, Kirby’s Sue Storm, with a background in archaeology and a PhD, was the mission specialist on the journey. Ben Grimm, portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, served as the pilot, while Joseph Quinn’s character, Johnny Storm, was the flight engineer. The comic book reveals that before the incident that turned him into the Human Torch, Johnny had aspirations to become a professional golfer.

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: “In this captivating tale penned by Matt Fraction and beautifully illustrated by Mark Buckingham, we delve deeper into the origins of the genius character Pascal, who is none other than Reed Richards before he formed the Fantastic Four. On his Earth, Pascal leveraged his unmatched intellect to revolutionize various fields, such as science, medicine, agriculture, and many more.

One significant difference between the MCU’s Fantastic Four and their comic book versions lies in their interactions with Mole Man. In the comics, Mole Man has typically been an adversary, but in the MCU, it appears that Sue Storm manages to establish a shared understanding or rapport with him.

In the upcoming release “Fantastic Four: First Steps Movie,” set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025, audiences can follow the latest adventures of the legendary superhero team, as this film introduces their origin story.
