In a recent disclosure, it’s been announced that the upcoming reboot of “The Punisher” in 2026 will create a new milestone in MCU history by featuring a well-known comic book villain. The “Punisher” Special Presentation, starring Jon Bernthal who has portrayed this role previously, is slated for release on a streaming platform sometime next year. This series continues the character’s R-rated tale following his escape from Kingpin’s grip at the conclusion of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1. While specific details about Frank Castle’s solo story are yet to be fully revealed, there have been hints about Marvel Studios’ plans for Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher.
Based on reports from insider Daniel Richtman, it’s anticipated that Marvel Studios’ forthcoming “Punisher” Special Presentation could make MCU history by featuring Jon Bernthal’s character, the Punisher, facing a female lead villain for the first time. Having recently battled the formidable Jigsaw in “The Punisher” Season 2 on Netflix, the identity of this new adversary is yet to be revealed, but it’s expected to have ties to Marvel Comics lore.
On his private Patreon platform, Richtman disclosed some exclusive information, hinting at the ongoing casting process for a strong female criminal mastermind role in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Punisher’ spin-off.
“For ‘The Punisher’ Special, they are currently casting a female crime boss as the villain.”
The report didn’t mention any particular actors or characters, yet this has sparked much conjecture among fans, as Marvel enthusiasts start proposing their guesses about who the character might be.
So far, Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher in his adult-oriented Marvel spin-off series has yet to encounter a female antagonist as a main adversary. His battles have predominantly been against powerful adversaries such as corrupt government officials like Paul Schulze’s William Rawlins and comic book villains like Ben Barnes’ Jigsaw.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of diving into “The Punisher” Special Presentation, one of the many enticing streaming titles Marvel Studios has in store for us in 2026. This continuation of Frank Castle’s gripping tale follows our ex-marine protagonist as he relentlessly pursues a unique brand of brutal justice against those who have wronged him, leaving no bones unbroken.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, Jon Bernthal, will be back in action as the main character and contributing my writing skills to the project. Excitingly, my Marvel character is set for more adventures within the MCU, reuniting with Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio), in the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again.
Who Could The Punisher’s Mystery Female Villain Be?
Next up, it’s probably a burning curiosity among many Marvel enthusiasts: Who might this enigmatic female antagonist of The Punisher turn out to be?
In the context of my interest in comics, dating back to 1974 with the introduction of The Punisher, it appears that Ma Gnucci and Lady Tanaka could be fitting contenders for the role as a “female crime boss”, as hinted by Daniel Richtman’s recent report.
Ma Gnucci
In the initial two seasons of Netflix’s “The Punisher” series, viewers became familiar with the Gnucci name as one of the crime families that Jon Bernthal’s famous antihero confronted in his relentless quest for justice. Interestingly, up until now, the woman in charge of the Gnuccis has managed to stay out of the Punisher’s limelight.
Isabella Gnucci, also known as Ma Gnucci, is the powerful matriarch of the Gnucci mafia family. She lost her limbs following a tragic attack by Frank. Despite this, she skillfully leverages her influence in the New York Mayor’s Office and the New York Police Department to run her criminal organization without interference, whether within or beyond New York City (the Big Apple).
In the Netflix series “Punisher”, Frank has taken the lives of several family members, including Tony Gnucci (played by James J. Lorenzo) in Season 1. It’s possible that Isabella may seek revenge, placing a bounty on The Punisher to confront this ruthless Marvel character who shows no mercy.
Lady Tanaka
Another strong possibility is Lady Tanaka. Known as a merciless figurehead, she heads the Tanaka Yakuza clan based in New York City, constantly clashing with the local mob over territorial disputes.
In 1989, she made her debut in the live-action Punisher film, playing the main adversary of the movie.
Although she doesn’t share the comedic backstory that some of Frank Castle’s other villains possess, introducing her could enrich the universe of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, expanding his R-rated superhero series by incorporating another facet of the criminal world within Marvel.
