Discover the actor who, despite being an outsider, has left a lasting impression in the industry. Intriguingly, he shared that he used some of his first earnings to purchase traditional ghee – a significant expenditure at the time. Furthermore, it was disclosed that he cycled an impressive 140 kilometers daily to attend acting classes. After collaborating with Janhvi Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, he’s once again in the limelight. If you haven’t guessed yet, I’m referring to Rajkummar Rao. The actor is generating buzz as the producers have recently adjusted the release date and platform for his upcoming film Bhool Chuk Maaf.
Rajkummar Rao hails from a modest upbringing in Gurugram, Haryana. His dad, Satya Prakash Yadav, was employed in the local revenue department, and life was far from comfortable. Tragically, his father passed away in 2016, followed by his mother, Kamlesh Yadav, in 2019.
Back in 2014, I made an official change to my name – from Yadav to Rao, and added an extra ‘m’ as well. The reason behind this shift was a personal one: both surnames have roots within my family lineage, but the double ‘m’ served as a tribute to my mother’s faith in numerology. A lesser-known aspect about me is that I am trained in Taekwondo.
In an open discussion on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Rajkummar candidly discussed the financial hardships he experienced during his upbringing. He reminisced about a challenging time when his teachers generously covered his and his siblings’ school tuition fees for three years because they didn’t want them to drop out of school. “They stepped in to help us,” he explained.
The actor went into more detail about what he spent from his initial paycheck on Aapka Apna Zakir show. Looking back at his high school years, he divulged that he taught dance to a young girl aged seven for 300 rupees. He mentioned that he also purchased groceries and was able to buy desi ghee for his family, which was significant for him.
Following his schooling, Rajkummar Rao decided to hone his acting skills at Sri Ram Centre in Delhi. Every day, he would cycle 140 km to reach there. One day, someone suggested that he enroll in a college for higher education to obtain a bus pass and save on travel expenses.
He found inspiration in Manoj Bajpayee and made up his mind to pursue acting as a career. In 2008, he enrolled in a two-year acting program at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune, as a stepping stone towards his Bollywood aspirations. Afterward, he ventured to Mumbai, the heart of Indian cinema, to fulfill those dreams.
In 2010, the actor known for “Bhool Chuk Maaf” made his acting debut with the anthology film titled “Love, Sex, and Scandal.” Over subsequent years, he gained recognition for his performances in “Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2” and “Talaash: The Truth Lies Within.
During a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, Rao shared stories from his initial days in Mumbai. He recounted tough financial times when he had just 18 rupees left in his bank account. “The three of us lived together in one apartment, and I often went without lunch. Instead, I would have a Parle G biscuit and Frooti for my midday meal. That cost me four rupees back then,” the actor explained.
In 2013, Rajkummar Rao made a significant mark in the film industry with critically praised movies such as Kai Po Che! and Shahid. Since then, he has solidified his reputation through outstanding performances in films like Queen, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Stree (and its sequel), Ludo, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, Mr & Mrs Mahi with Janhvi Kapoor, among others.
In the coming days, you can catch him starring alongside Wamiqa Gabbi in “Bhool Chuk Maaf,” premiering on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. Originally planned for a theater release on May 9, the movie’s makers have adjusted both the release date and platform. Additionally, he has another upcoming project titled “Maalik” lined up.
In their personal lives, Rajkummar and actress Patralekhaa first crossed paths in 2010. They soon started dating and finally tied the knot in November 2021. Their romantic journey began on a music video set. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Patralekha once joked that her initial impression of Rajkummar was that he seemed ‘creepy.’
