Discussing none less than Gopal Singh Bedi, more famously known as Ranjeet Bedi, whose memorable acting roles in numerous films since the 70s and 80s have deeply touched audiences’ hearts. Prior to joining the industry, he pursued a science education and completed his graduation from Delhi’s Hindu College.
He was quite a sports enthusiast and represented his college team as the football team’s goalkeeper, which also earned him the title of Goli (misspelled version of Goalie). In an earlier conversation with Film Companion, the veteran actor shared that his mentor thought he was “maaroing line” on his daughter.
This incident led to a disagreement between him and his mentor, resulting in him parting ways with the IAF and returning to his carefree lifestyle. Later on, Ranjeet got introduced to Bollywood by a close friend’s father, Ranvir Singh, who had ties with the royal family of Kota and experience working with individuals from the British film industry. When Singh presented him with his first movie role in Zindagi Ki Raahein (a film that was never released), he deceived his family by claiming to be employed in a field other than films, as it was looked down upon at the time. He then moved to Mumbai to pursue this clandestine career opportunity.
Following some intriguing ups and downs throughout his acting career, he first appeared on screen in the 1970 film “Saawan Bhado.” This debut was followed by roles in numerous other movies such as “Sharmeelee,” “Reshma Aur Shera,” “Border,” “Bulandi,” and countless others. Over time, it’s been noted that he has starred in over 200 films.
During an interview with the publication, the iconic actor disclosed that he was exceptionally busy in the seventies, even having as many as 80 films in production at one moment. He further mentioned this to the publication, also reminiscing about the era when he and Rajesh Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and others would often socialize together.
Despite the fact that he’s only worked on Hindi films for the past decade, with his next project scheduled for release in 2025 alongside Akshay Kumar in Housefull 5; his passion for acting remains undeterred, allowing him to work in movies according to his own conditions.
