Meet actor who left psychology degree only to enter showbiz, worked with Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor but now takes up selective work

As a lifestyle expert, I have had the pleasure of observing and admiring the journey of Amrita Rao in both her personal and professional life. Her story is inspiring and one that showcases the power of determination and resilience.

For decades, the Bollywood film industry has seen numerous individuals leave their old professions behind to pursue acting. Once they enter the industry, they put in a great deal of effort to establish themselves. Some manage to achieve success almost immediately, while others require years of persistence.

Today’s ‘meet the actor’ is one such actress who dropped her Psychology degree to pursue a modeling career and later did superhit films. She is none other than Amrita Rao. Let’s dive deep into her career.

Amrita Rao’s impressive acting career

Amrita Rao is mainly recognized for her relatable and endearing roles in Hindi films. She attended Canossa Girls School in Andheri, Bombay, and later pursued a psychology degree at Sophia College in Mumbai. However, she left college to pursue a modeling career instead.

Prior to embarking on her acting journey, Rao and her sister Preetika featured in numerous commercials while they were in college. Their initial foray into public performances took place when they made an appearance in Alisha Chinai’s music video for the song “Woh Pyar Mera.”

Amrita began her acting journey with the 2002 fantasy thriller “Ab Ke Baras” by Raj Kanwar, sharing screen time with newcomer Aarya Babbar. She took on her initial leading character as Anjali Thapar in this production. Later, she acted alongside Ajay Devgn in the biographical period film “The Legend of Bhagat Singh,” portraying the role of Mannewali, Bhagat’s fiancé. Unfortunately, the movie did not fare well.

In 2003, Rao made her mark with the hit coming-of-age romance film “Ishq Vishk,” sharing the screen with Shahid Kapoor for the first time. Set in college, their collaboration resulted in a box office success and garnered praise for both the movie and Rao’s acting skills.

In the year 2005, Shahid and Amrita teamed up for two films – “Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!” and “Shikhar.” Meanwhile, Rao appeared in the role of the female lead in Sooraj R. Barjatya’s romantic production titled “Vivah,” which was their fourth project together with Shahid.

In this movie, I had the pleasure of following the heartwarming story of two people as they navigated the path from engagement to marriage. I had the role of bringing Poonam, a young woman with traditional upbringing, to life on screen. This particular film has become one of my most cherished projects and remains among the most beloved by audiences today.

In contrast, Rao first appeared as a judge on the 2009 TV program “Perfect Bride.” She judged the show together with Shekhar Suman and Malaika Arora.

Among her other films are “Heyy Babyy,” “Athidhi,” “Jolly LLB,” and more. She additionally acted in a movie titled “Main Hoon Na” alongside Shah Rukh Khan, with Zayed Khan and Sushmita Sen as co-stars.

In 2016, Amrita got married to RJ Anmol. They became parents to a son named Veer on November 1, 2020. In an anniversary video shared on their YouTube channel, Couple of Things, the couple disclosed that they had spent just around 150,000 Indian rupees on their wedding, covering their clothes, venue, and other related costs.

Amrita shared, “I preferred wearing a traditional attire for the occasion. The saree I chose cost around ₹3000… I wasn’t drawn towards designer clothes… Instead, I accessorized with artificial jewelry. My mangalsutra was priced at approximately ₹18,000.” She went on to say, “We have always valued love above material wealth in our marriage. Money is not a symbol of status for us. We wanted only our family and close friends present during our wedding ceremony. Consequently, we kept the expenses to a minimum and had a delightful experience.”

Instead, Anmol expressed that their marriage mirrored their unique personalities and they preferred a open and honest approach. Simultaneously, their hit talk show, Couple of Things, has gained considerable popularity.
