Meet actor who wasn’t allowed to dub as she didn’t have ‘shrill’ voice, worked with 3 Khans, suffered miscarriage and is now married to top filmmaker

Today on “Meet the Star,” we’ll be discussing a highly esteemed actress who has dominated Bollywood since the ’90s. She’s collaborated with heavyweights like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan, among others. This star is married to a prominent director, and she bravely shared a difficult period in her life when she experienced a miscarriage. Can you figure it out yet? We’re referring to none other than Rani Mukerji.

1996 marked Rani’s initial appearance in the movie “Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat,” which was later followed by her first significant commercial triumph with “Ghulam.” Her impressive acting career includes numerous memorable films such as “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” “Chalte Chalte,” “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,” “Black,” “Hum Tum,” and “Mardaani,” among others.

Over the course of more than two decades, I’ve been absolutely captivated by the journey of Rani Mukerji in Bollywood. She’s made a name for herself with exceptional movie selections and performances. However, there was a pivotal moment early in her career when she wasn’t given the opportunity to dub for Ghulam – a decision that was jointly made by Aamir Khan, Mukesh Bhatt, and Vikram Bhatt.

She stated during her speech at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne that they collectively chose to give my voice the label because they held the opinion that mainstream actresses typically possess a high-pitched tone. They didn’t agree that women should sound like me, with a voice described as ‘sexy and powerful’. Instead, they thought otherwise.

Rani has been blissfully wedded to Aditya Chopra, the chief executive of Yash Raj Films, since April 21, 2014. Together, they have a daughter named Adira, born in 2015. In an interview with Galatta Plus last year, she also discussed her ‘difficult’ miscarriage that occurred during the pandemic. She disclosed that they sadly lost their second child five months into her pregnancy.

For nearly seven years, I’ve been hoping for a second child. My daughter is currently eight, and around her first or first-and-a-half birthday, I began trying for another child. I persisted in my efforts, only to eventually become pregnant, but unfortunately, I suffered a loss. It was undeniably a very challenging period in my life,” she expressed.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that come next year, February 27, 2026, you’ll find me gracing the big screen in Mardaani 3.
