As a dedicated follower of Bollywood, I must say that the journey of Mamta Kulkarni is one that is both fascinating and heartbreaking. From her meteoric rise to fame working alongside some of Bollywood’s biggest stars to her controversial personal life and professional downfall, it’s a tale as complex as any Hindi film script.

Among numerous Bollywood stars, just a few manage to leave an enduring impression in their careers. One such actor, who collaborated with actors like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar, experienced a professional setback when her name became associated with drug trafficking allegations.

Discussing none other than Mamta Kulkarni, who first appeared on the Bollywood scene in the 1992 release, Tiranga. Originating from a middle-class Marathi Brahmin family, this actress gained prominence following her successful roles in films such as groundbreaking titles like Aashiq Awara, Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, and more.

Instead of just being well-known, Mamta often found herself at the center of scandals. From kissing Akshay Kumar in Sabse Bada Khiladi to posing bare for a magazine cover; Kulkarni consistently grabbed headlines due to questionable actions. The controversy grew further with rumors of her association with Chhota Rajan, a henchman for the infamous underworld boss Dawood Ibrahim. Later, she was also linked to drug lord Vicky Goswami.

In contrast to many who avoid associations with the shady underworld, Mamta is known to have wed Vicky in 1997, a time when he was imprisoned for drug trafficking and faced a sentence of 25 years. However, by November 2023, Vicky had been released from prison.

Following his release in 2016, Goswami addressed the claims made against him by India Today TV, denying both accusations that he was a drug lord and rumors about marrying an actress named Mamta Kulkarni. He clarified, “Mamta Kulkarni is just a friend who supported me in tough times, but she is not my wife; I have never been married to her.

When Mamta’s acting career seemed to be on a decline with no movie offers coming her way, it is claimed that filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi signed her for the Sunny Deol-led movie Ghatak. Later, she even landed a leading role in China Gate. Unfortunately, during the production of these films, Mamta was unexpectedly replaced from the projects.

Considering the circumstances surrounding her dismissal in the glamorous world, various speculations are circulating. Mamta claimed that filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi requested inappropriate behavior from her on the set of China Gate, which she flatly refused. Subsequently, she asserted that her character’s role was diminished. However, Santoshi vehemently denied all such allegations.

On a different note, rumors within the industry hinted that the director may have felt envious towards his leading actress due to her close relationship with action director Tinu Verma. Following her disagreement with Santoshi, Mamta struggled to secure roles in Bollywood and her career declined rapidly afterwards.

Apart from this revelation, it was discovered on April 12, 2016 that Mamta Kulkarni was involved in a drug case when two vehicles were pulled over by the Thane police. Inside these cars, they found approximately 2-3 kilograms of Ephedrine (a powder), which is a controlled substance under the NDPS Act. During the subsequent probe, ten individuals were apprehended while seven others, including Mamta Kulkarni, were identified as fugitives.

Simultaneously, the actress persisted in refuting the accusations. In 2016, she expressed that her outlook on life had shifted, and she was prepared to surrender her belongings to the authorities. She identified herself as a Yogini and made it clear that the police were free to seize anything from her.

Earlier this year, a case against the actress was dropped by the Bombay High Court. It’s said that she has since relocated and now resides in Mombasa, Kenya.
