Meet Actor whose father wanted him to join Army, but he went on to work with Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan and is now one of a versatile star

As a die-hard fan of the enigmatic Kumud Mishra, I find myself utterly captivated by his journey from the hallowed grounds of theater to the glittering screens of Bollywood. His humble beginnings in the military school’s vibrant theatrical scene in Belgaum, where he dared to dream beyond the uniformed life, are a testament to his indomitable spirit and passion for art.

Originally making a name for himself on stage, this actor later found success on television, becoming well-known for his captivating acting. Initially, he played secondary roles before cementing his place in the film industry. Throughout his career, he’s worked alongside many prominent figures in cinema, demonstrating his adaptability and skill.

Today, let’s explore Kumud Mishra’s transition from the stage to the silver screen, emphasizing his unwavering commitment and versatility that has earned him esteem and influence within the realm of entertainment.

Currently shining on the city’s stage, Mishra is one of the top and adaptable actors, starring in plays such as “Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane,” “The Yellow Scooter Man,” “Cotton 56 Polyester 84,” “Bali and Shambhu,” “Turel,” “Ilhaam,” “As They Say,” “Dream Flirting,” “The Owl and the Pussycat,” and “Smoky Coals.” Prior to his move to Mumbai for television work, Kumud honed his skills at the National School of Drama in Bhopal and performed in local theatre. His fruitful collaboration with writer-director Manav Kaul has led to a wealth of theatrical projects.

In a past interview, he shared that his father served in the military and he studied at a military school located in Belgaum. This institution boasted a lively theater community, complete with inter-house competitions and annual day performances. He pointed out that this atmosphere was ideal for fostering talent. As he prepared to graduate, there was an offer for him to join the army, which he declined in favor of pursuing a career in theater. Looking back, he occasionally wonders if his parents would have been happier had he chosen the military instead.

Additionally, he mentioned that during his time in Bhopal, he took part in multiple plays directed by several individuals. He even went against tradition by not confining himself to a single theater troupe and instead collaborating with various groups.

Initially, Kumud gained recognition in the realm of Indian television. His intricate portrayals in series such as Swabhimaan and Hum Paanch demonstrated his adaptability and knack for resonating with viewers. Nevertheless, it was his leap to the big screen that propelled him to fame.

1996 marked his first appearance on screen with Sardari Begum, but it was his captivating portrayal of the mysterious Ustad Farhan in the critically lauded film Rockstar (featuring Ranbir Kapoor) that truly catapulted Mishra to stardom. His performance earned him universal acclaim and solidified his status as a trusted and potent actor.

After the triumph of Rockstar, Mishra consistently shone in diverse roles such as Airlift, Badlapur, Sultan, Rustom, among others. He collaborated with Salman Khan on the intense action films Tiger Zinda Hai and Tiger 3. Mishra’s talent for effortlessly adapting to different genres and characters has made him highly valued in Bollywood, winning him admiration from both critics and fans.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, the performer expressed, “What truly matters is my role as an actor. I understand that success and failure are inherent aspects of this profession. Occasionally, I’m offered intriguing projects, while at other times, not so much. Nevertheless, I continuously hone my acting skills and strive to make a living. There are numerous actors eagerly awaiting their opportunity. Every actor aspires to excel and tackle more significant roles, but ultimately, the decision lies with the director and producer regarding whether they’re willing to take a risk on me.”

Kumud was last seen in Vedaa alongside John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh.
