As a fan of K-pop, I am genuinely impressed by the journey and growth of this young artist from NCT Dream. Having debuted at such a tender age, he has managed to carve out a unique shape for himself in the industry, proving that he is more than just a pretty face or a talented vocalist.
In conversation with K-pop sensation Mark, who goes by his stage name simply as Mark, it’s hard to believe he’s just 25 years old. Born in Canada, this talented rapper is a member of the massive group NCT (and its sub-groups NCT Dream and NCT 127), and has been in the public limelight for more than ten years.
In 2012, he tried out for a popular Korean K-pop firm named SM Entertainment during their talent search in Vancouver. The following year, Mark relocated to Korea and became part of the SM Rookies, which was SM’s training squad consisting of promising newcomers who later turned into many well-known stars.
At just 16 years old, I found myself stepping into the spotlight as a member of SM Entertainment’s innovative boy group concept, NCT. This dynamic team, consisting of over 20 gifted vocalists, is often divided into smaller units, such as NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV. Since then, my career has skyrocketed, with sold-out shows in arenas seating over 15,000 people and multiple platinum albums under my belt.
The K-pop star is interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter over Zoom from Paris, taking a break during the European leg of NCT Dream’s world tour. He promotes their latest album, “Dreamscape”, saying, “I believe this album will propel our group to greater heights.
Can you talk about the new NCT Dream album, Dreamscape? What have preparations been like?
This upcoming album boasts a full 11 tracks, and speaking of one in particular, “When I’m With You,” it’s a tune that truly embodies the essence of NCT Dream for our fans. It captures the essence of our original style and vibe, but with a fresh, contemporary twist. I have a feeling our fans will pick up on this and appreciate it. Frankly, I can’t wait to hear their reactions! The song is mellow yet energetic at the same time, which I think they’ll enjoy.
Is it often said that you’re one of the busiest individuals in the K-pop industry due to your hectic schedule? How do you perceive this claim? Does it resonate with your personal experience?
It seems quite true, but let me chuckle about it! You see, I have numerous K-pop idol friends too, and when we chat, they’re often preoccupied, saying things like “Oh, we’re swamped as well. How are you?” They’re always jetting off for tours or engagements. The same goes for my own teammates – they’re constantly busy. While I am genuinely occupied in real life, it appears that my being part of both NCT Dream and NCT 127 gives people the impression that I’m even busier than I actually am. This might be due to the image associated with the roles and the actual workload.
“Being so swamped with work, what’s your favorite way to unwind and gather energy during tours or while preparing for a fresh album?”
One thing that I really have to have every time is a song that’s just kind of heals me from my current condition. I need to have that. Whether I’m walking in the airport or going on the bus, that, let’s say three and a half minutes, would really kind of cool me down. That song changes every now and then. Other than that, I like putting on a sleeping pack for my skin before going to bed. I think that cools me down too.
Do NCT Dream and NCT 127 typically have distinctly different sounds? Your individual songs also vary from these groups. Do you have a preferred genre, or do you enjoy the flexibility to explore various styles?
Currently, I’m working on my first solo album. The challenging aspect was discovering that I could adapt to virtually any genre. With so many possibilities swirling in my mind, it became difficult to decide which ones would suit this particular album best. However, I enjoy performing in the styles of 127, Dream, and for my solo album. I believe one of my unique abilities is versatility, which is why I think the message I want to convey is crucial. This, in turn, helps me narrow down all those genres.
What do you find yourself drawn to creatively and musically?
Among all music genres, it’s hip-hop that holds a special place in my heart as the one I grew up listening to the most. My passion for music was ignited when hip-hop ruled supreme. Any 808 beat or simply a hip-hop vibe in a track instantly captures my attention. Nowadays, I find myself particularly drawn to a hip-hop foundation blended with any other genre.
Reflecting back on your early days, you began your career rather young. Now, with years of experience under your belt, how does this stage of your career compare to the one you initially embarked upon?
Over time, I’ve grown more defined in my skills and approach, shifting from a tentative mindset of “I’ll give it my best” after my training period, to a place where I have a clearer sense of self and purpose. While I wouldn’t say I’ve become significantly more confident, I can certainly say that I have a better understanding of how I want to present myself, both to others and to myself. In essence, I feel like I’ve found my niche or shape in my craft, and now I can build upon it with greater clarity and intention.
Do you see yourself as a role model to younger artists?
It’s not a question I’ve encountered in quite this form before, but I’ve heard something intriguing… As for K-pop, I find myself straddling the line between the third and fourth generations. I’ve learned that some fourth-generation idols admire me and my work, which is both humbling and surprising. When they express their respect, I can’t help but feel like I’m standing on the precipice of a new era in my career, and I’m already hearing such kind words. Naturally, this only strengthens my resolve to continue working hard and demonstrating that their admiration is well-placed.
What are your kind of goals for this upcoming year as you close this one out?
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement for the upcoming NCT Dream album this year! Honestly, I can hardly contain my anticipation. This album has given me insights into the kind of leader I should be for my team, and I believe its influence will be profound.
Given that you mentioned discovering your leadership style in NCT Dream, does leading bring an increased sense of responsibility or pressure upon you?
I’ll be honest, I believe I am. It seems more so from my followers than fans, but let me clarify. I’m deeply invested in demonstrating and validating this fresh idea to them, as it could significantly benefit our team. As the head of this organization, I’m eager to propel us to greater heights. I want to show them this transformation, which is why I’m putting in all the effort I can for this project. It might be a form of positive pressure, you could say.
