Meg Ryan to be Honored at Sarajevo Film Festival, Screen Rom-Com ‘What Happens Later’

As a gamer who has grown up watching movies and cherishing the performances of some of Hollywood’s finest, I can wholeheartedly say that Meg Ryan is undeniably one of those actresses whose work has left an indelible mark on my cinematic journey. From her iconic roles in romantic comedies like “When Harry Met Sally” and “You’ve Got Mail,” to her powerful dramatic portrayals in films such as “Courage Under Fire” and “When a Man Loves a Woman,” Meg Ryan has consistently captivated audiences with her charm, talent, and versatility.

I’m thrilled to announce that I, Meg Ryan, will be honored with the prestigious Heart of Sarajevo Award at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival! This recognition is a testament to my passion and dedication in the film industry over the years. I’m deeply grateful for this honor and can’t wait to celebrate with the film community in Sarajevo!

The star plans to showcase a special screening of her 1998 romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail,” featuring Tom Hanks, at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema – the same location where the movie was initially screened during its 5th event, exactly 25 years ago.

Ryan will additionally lead a workshop, supervised by renowned Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanović, famous for his Academy Award-winning movie “No Man’s Land.” Ryan’s recent work, the 2023 production titled “What Happens Later,” will also be showcased at the festival. This film, distributed by Bleecker Street Media, stars both Ryan and David Duchovny. The film is directed and written by the actor who played Harry in “When Harry Met Sally.” It serves as her second directorial endeavor.

“Jovan Marjanović, head of the Sarajevo Film Festival, shared, ‘Meg Ryan captured our hearts from the get-go!’ Not only did she win us over with her enchanting acting, but she also demonstrated her skills as a director and writer. We’re thrilled to bestow upon her the Heart of Sarajevo.”

Ryan garnered significant praise for her acting in the movie “When Harry Met Sally,” directed by Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron, followed by another collaboration with Ephron on “Sleepless in Seattle,” which brought several Golden Globe nomination nods her way.

Ryan has garnered praise for her unique, dramatic character depictions. Notably, she played a military woman nominated for a Medal of Honor opposite Denzel Washington in “Courage Under Fire,” directed by Ed Zwick, and portrayed an alcohol-dependent individual alongside Andy Garcia in “When a Man Loves a Woman,” directed by Luis Mandoki. For her acting alongside Kiefer Sutherland in the Sundance Institute’s “Promised Land,” she received a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award.
