As a seasoned cinephile with a keen eye for feminist undercurrents and a soft spot for Megan Fox, I must say that her journey from the Transformers franchise to Jennifer’s Body and now Subservience has been quite an intriguing one.
Shortly following her breakout performance in the 2007 blockbuster “Transformers,” actress Megan Fox appeared in the critically acclaimed feminist horror film “Jennifer’s Body.” In this movie, after being possessed by a demon during a failed rock band’s attempt to gain fame and fortune through her sacrifice, Jennifer Check exploits her attractiveness to ensnare unwitting high school males for consumption. The film is rich with themes of female empowerment, camaraderie, bodily autonomy, sexual liberation, and now you can watch it free of charge on Tubi.
Under the direction of Karyn Kasuma and script by Diablo Cody, the film titled “Jennifer’s Body” features Amanda Seyfried as Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, who is not only Jennifer’s best friend but also narrates the movie, detailing her horrific deeds until the very end. Made on a modest budget of $16 million, this film didn’t create much of a stir at the box office, raking in only $31.6 million. At its initial release, it didn’t impress most critics, although some, like Roger Ebert, acknowledged its uniqueness, praising it as a movie that is “‘not your typical assembly-line teen horror thriller.’
Over the past 15 years, Jennifer’s Body has developed a strong following among feminists and horror enthusiasts. Initially perceived as a typical slasher film, it’s now recognized that it offers more depth than expected. Events like the #MeToo movement in 2017 have led many to reevaluate the movie, its themes, and Diablo Cody’s script. These works shed light on how women are often objectified by men, treated as mere objects to cater to male needs and desires. The film’s protagonist, Jennifer, uses her allure to combat patriarchy, albeit in an unconventional manner (with her teeth). By flipping traditional horror tropes, Jennifer’s Body presents a groundbreaking film that was ahead of its time in numerous ways. If produced today, it would likely gain even more success.
History Repeats Itself for Megan Fox
2024 finds Fox once again in a recognizable role, appearing in the sci-fi thriller “Subservience” as Alice, an AI housekeeping robot who caters to a man in need following his wife’s illness. Of course, she eventually gains self-awareness. Isn’t it unfortunate that he has to do his own laundry? Critics aren’t exactly enamored with her latest film, although they appreciate her acting (as they did with “Jennifer’s Body”). However, they also label it a run-of-the-mill production lacking fresh ideas in the genre. This seems eerily reminiscent of the reception 15 years ago for her groundbreaking feminist film.
It appears that Megan Fox might find herself in a similar situation as before, but we’ll have to wait and see if the movie “Subservience” eventually receives the same acclaim as a feminist masterpiece, shining a light on the wickedness within men, only for the narrative to ultimately expose their sinister desires. In the meantime, you can watch Megan Fox in “Jennifer’s Body,” which is currently available for free streaming on Tubi.
