Meo Is a Retro Haven in Vancouver’s Chinatown

As a dedicated fan of immersive experiences and nostalgic escapes, I was absolutely captivated by Meo, the enchanting cocktail bar and restaurant nestled in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown. The moment I stepped inside this dimly lit hideaway, designed by the masterful Ste Marie, I was transported back to the hedonistic energy of ’70s and ’80s Hong Kong.

Tucked away on the ground floor of a modest Chinatown structure, Meo provides a charming retreat transporting you back to the indulgent vibes of ’70s and ’80s Hong Kong. This fresh addition to the scene, crafted by Ste Marie, is an alluring counterpart to Bao Bei and Kissa Tanto.

Ste Marie is recognized for designing engaging, storyline-filled environments throughout North America. They skillfully combine nostalgia and functionality, leading to distinctive and captivating spaces that foster successful businesses.

In a softly lit setting reminiscent of the past, customers are taken back in time. This nostalgic feel is influenced by Greg Girard’s images of Hong Kong nightlife and secret love motels. The room is swathed in plush pink curtains and vintage floral carpets, while ’70s Guzzini red pendant lights create striking contrasts against the dark wood-paneled walls. A radiant jukebox contributes to the old-school ambiance, enhancing the multi-layered atmosphere with its textured charm.

Meo’s decoration is a unique mix of second-hand treasures bought in Taiwan and contemporary accents, resulting in a lively fusion of rumpus room and bedroom styles. Vibrant artwork adorns the area, adding depth to the time-travel vibe it generates. Notable art pieces include an enchanting painting of a Persian cat and a captivating vinyl mural depicting the interior of a North Korean hotel.
