Mercedes-Benz Electrifies the "Popemobile"

As a lifelong enthusiast of automobiles and a firm believer in sustainability, I am absolutely thrilled by Mercedes-Benz‘s latest innovation: the electric Popemobile! Having followed the evolution of the Popemobile since its introduction in the 80s, it’s incredible to witness this symbol of tradition embracing modern technology.

Mercedes-Benz has presented Pope Francis with its inaugural electric Popemobile, modeled on the latest Electric G-Class. A unique creation, this vehicle was meticulously crafted by teams in Graz, Sindelfingen, and Rome. During the 2025 Jubilee, which is expected to attract millions to Rome, Pope Francis will travel in an eco-friendly manner using this customized car.

The electric Pope’s vehicle adheres to specific, customized standards for the Pope’s comfort. It boasts an adjustable height, rotating central seat for improved sight and communication, and a protective canopy against inclement weather. Its exceptional construction includes a newly designed one-piece rear door and a distinctly white pearl coat, preserving the classic design aesthetic of Popemobiles.

In response to comments about the vehicle, Mercedes-Benz Chief Executive Officer, Ola Källenius, emphasized their dedication to electric mobility and reducing carbon emissions by saying, “This Popemobile symbolizes our strong stance on electrification and combating climate change.

As a devoted admirer of Mercedes-Benz, I’m always in awe of their rich history. For almost a century, they’ve been honoring tradition by supplying vehicles to the Vatican. The first Popemobile, a customized G-Class, was unveiled in the 1980s. Now, I’m thrilled to share that the latest Popemobile, constructed on the G580 platform, seamlessly blends EQ technology with unique features tailored for the Pope. The electric Popemobile is set to make its grand public appearance during the 2025 Jubilee, continuing Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation and service.
