In the 2025 TV lineup, Grey’s Anatomy remains a powerhouse with an impressive 21 seasons to its name, and it’s one of the top shows available on Netflix for streaming. Over the course of this long-running medical drama, viewers have been gripped by intense plotlines that keep them guessing, although not all story arcs have been well-received. A notable example is the controversial romantic subplot involving Meredith and George, which has left a lasting impression on fans. The tension between characters often reflected the discomfort felt by the actors playing these roles.
In the second season of Grey’s, the two close friends crossed a boundary that wasn’t driven by romantic feelings. This awkward encounter caused tension between Meredith and George, and interestingly enough, this dynamic was similar off-screen for Ellen Pompeo and T.R. Knight due to their closeness. On the Call Her Daddy podcast, Pompeo spoke candidly about how uncomfortable the situation became afterwards, making me appreciate my non-acting life even more.
T.R. and I share a strong bond of friendship, but our script required us to perform a love scene which left us both emotional. We both shed tears, as the situation felt uncomfortable and awkward for both of us. He wasn’t keen on it, neither was I. When we finally filmed it, the results were less than satisfactory.
Occasionally, it might seem simpler for actors to perform intimate scenes with friends because of their existing chemistry. However, this isn’t always the truth, and it often leads to discomfort, as demonstrated by how Pompeo and Knight responded to their scene. Fortunately, Meredith and George’s storyline was only a one-time event; nevertheless, it wasn’t an easy scene to enact, and I can easily imagine how uneasy they felt. At least, the awkwardness was present both on-screen and off-screen.
Despite its controversial storylines and questionable relationships, Grey’s Anatomy remains the longest-running prime-time medical drama. Although Season 22 hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s hard to imagine it not returning. However, a new medical drama might compel Grey’s Anatomy to make significant adjustments, potentially transforming the series altogether.
Despite this, I’m glad that the series didn’t push Meredith and George into a romantic relationship again, as it turned out well for both the characters and their friendship off-screen between Ellen Pompeo and Scott Knight. Years later, when Meredth had her reunion with George in her COVID-inspired beach fantasy, it was just as heartwarming and emotional as before.
It’s reasonable to expect that, given Grey’s Anatomy continues its run, there will be numerous uncomfortable scenes ahead for both characters and actors. Regrettably, this is often the case in television production. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to have affected the rapport between Pompeo and Knight, on-screen or off-. If you’re curious about these awkward moments, you can watch them all by subscribing to Hulu and Netflix as all seasons are available for streaming there.
