Thom Browne tailored a starry group for Monday night’s Met Gala.
A significant number of high-profile attendees gathered for an annual customary group photograph at New York’s Pierre Hotel, donning outfits by the renowned American designer Thom Browne. This event has become a tradition, and those gracing the occasion this year were stars from various fields such as Hollywood, sports, music, and fashion. The list included Demi Moore, Zoe Saldaña (a recent Oscar winner), Janelle Monáe, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul Tazewell, Tramell Tillman from ‘Severance’, Anok Yai, Walton Goggins, Angel Reese who made headlines in the WNBA, Lorde, and Saquon Barkley, a Super Bowl champion for the Philadelphia Eagles.
2021’s Met Gala centered around the theme “Tailored for You,” perfectly aligning with Browne’s contemporary interpretation of formal tailoring that has drawn celebrities over the years. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Browne shared, “For me, everything revolves around tailoring. I enjoy pushing and redefining the conventions of black-tie dressing. I aim to present these traditional elements in unexpected ways, to create something extraordinary … something transcendent.
For details on how he managed it at this year’s Met Gala: The event is the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s significant annual fundraiser each year. This year’s edition honors the Costume Institute’s spring fashion exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour from Vogue, and LeBron James (who had to withdraw due to a knee injury at the last minute) served as co-chairs. Demi Moore
Last year’s standout film The Substance‘s Oscar-nominated leading actress made an appearance in a Thom Browne dress that mimicked a men’s tuxedo. According to the fashion brand, this unique ensemble showcased “the essence of a suit, magnified and elevated.” The creation required 7,600 hours of skilled labor and was adorned with over 1.4 million beads, including 222,000 black square sequins, more than a million black bugle beads, and 103,500 cut beads.
Whoopi Goldberg
On The View, one of the co-hosts showcased an outfit that required over 7,700 hours to craft. The centerpiece was a coat adorned with approximately 350,000 matte white sequins, paired with a duchess satin raglan-sleeve tailored dress. To complete the look, she wore a wool bouclé top hat from the fall 2015 collection. She accessorized with items from L’Enchanteur, a design house based in Brooklyn run by twins Dynasty and Soull Ogun. These included brass finger caps, gold sunglasses, a gold link chain and keyhole brooch embellished with black opal and blue and white diamonds, as well as rings featuring green tourmaline, diamonds, tanzanite, garnet, and purple sapphire.
Janelle Monáe
The versatile personality appeared on the red carpet wearing an ensemble designed jointly by Thom Browne and Academy Award-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell. This outfit included a custom, oversized trompe l’oeil suit cape from Browne that tricked the eye, along with a duchesse silk briefcase adorned with embroidered grosgrain ribbons. To complete her ensemble, she wore a monocle over her left eye and a top hat. As Monáe walked down the carpet, she took off the overcoat to reveal an innovative two-tone sport coat and skirt in pinstripe suiting, with red wool crepe, visible lining, and shoulder pads made of white silk faille. The look was finished with a unique diamond necklace crafted from 1800 Cristalino Tequila, designed by jewelry designer Jonathan Raksha from Maison Raksha, which accentuated the black-and-white striped seamed intarsia tie.
Paul Tazewell
The designer who’s known for work on the Wicked, West Side Story, Hamilton, and Harriet movies, donned a custom Thom Browne tailcoat and ankle-length pleated skirt in black three-ply mohair with subtle grosgrain trim and a double-breasted off-white silk vest, paired over a white cotton piqué shirt and finished with black patent leather long wing boots.

The costume designer, whose projects include Wicked, West Side Story, Hamilton, and Harriet, chose to wear a Thom Browne tailcoat and ankle-length pleated skirt in black three-ply mohair with tonal grosgrain edging, a double-breasted off-white silk vest, and a white cotton piqué shirt underneath. She completed the look with black patent leather long wing boots.
Lorde
Following the unveiling of her latest single, “What Was That,” the New Zealand singer-songwriter made a striking appearance, donning a tailor-made dark grey duchess satin skirt styled like a cummerbund, along with a companion backless top and an oversized jacket in the shape of a bag. To complete her look, she wore longwing brogues in a fun mix of grey patent leather.
Zoe Saldaña
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the stunning outfit Emilia Pérez donned on the red carpet. Instead of a traditional tuxedo, she opted for a custom creation – a unique blend of masculine and feminine elements. The bodice was a sleek black plissé piqué, adorned with a shiny, white embroidered bugle pinstripe sleeve that added a touch of sophistication. The skirt featured an extended bow, and she paired it with long wing brogue platforms in a stunning combination of black and white patent leather. This breathtaking ensemble required no less than 10,000 hours to perfect, and the entire look was elegantly tied together with an oversized bow. Simply incredible!
Walton Goggins
Acting veteran from HBO’s “The White Lotus” was attired in an innovative “inside-out” overcoat tailored specifically for him, featuring a pleated skirt detail at the back, made from a blend of tonal wool suiting, black double duchess silk, and exposed canvas. Beneath this ensemble, he wore a traditional oxford shirt paired with a silk faille tie at the back. Goggins opted for long wing brogues in sleek black patent leather shoes, complementing his outfit with David Yurman jewelry and a Vacheron Constantin timepiece.
Tramell Tillman
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary ensemble worn by the star of “Severance”. His attire was a striking black velvet tailcoat, elegantly trimmed with black silk satin and gracefully accessorized with a bouquet of handcrafted calla lilies – his preferred blossom. He complemented this masterpiece with classic black-and-white pinstripe trousers, a sleek black silk cummerbund, a stylish grey-and-white university stripe Oxford shirt featuring a round collar, and a dashing black silk faille bow tie. To complete the look, he donned opera ballerina spectators in sophisticated black and white patent leather. Simply put, he was nothing short of a sartorial masterpiece on the red carpet!
Angel Reese
The leading player of the Chicago Sky donned a unique, black duchess satin trompe l’oeil cropped jacket adorned with silk satin lacing and three-ply mohair cups as contrasting details. She also wore an emphasized waist corset, and a matching drop-waist skirt with a long train.
Saquon Barkley
The star running back was dressed elegantly in a tailor-made, three-piece traditional tuxedo made of black three-ply mohair fabric, trimmed with subtle black grosgrain ribbon and intricately embroidered with a four-bar design in matte and shiny black beads. He wore long wing brogues featuring sleek black patent leather.
Anok Yai
The high-profile fashion model adorned an intricately designed, custom-made ensemble in black. The shirt dress featured a corset style and was adorned with approximately 1.1 million bugle beads meticulously arranged in a crisscross pattern, showcasing accentuated hip detailing. Over this, she wore a draped black jacket and a white moiré skirt undercoat, both accessorized with a matching black beaded overcoat, which was cinched around her waist. The creation required an impressive 9,900 hours of skilled handwork to bring it to life.
