Mia Goth's Divisive 2024 Horror Sequel MaXXXine Hits Streaming Next Month

As a die-hard horror fan who has been following Ti West’s work since his breakout films like “The House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers,” I’ve been eagerly anticipating the conclusion to the X trilogy, especially with Mia Goth in the lead role as Maxine Minx. Having grown up in the 80s myself, I can say that MaXXXine perfectly captured the essence of that era, from its vibrant fashion to its pulsating music.

If you didn’t catch Ti West’s finale for the X trilogy on the big screen earlier this year, don’t worry! MaXXXine is set to stream next month, perfect timing for Halloween. Starring Mia Goth in the title role, the film chronicles Maxine Minx’s ambitious journey towards stardom in 1985 Los Angeles. However, her aspirations and dreams are put at risk when she becomes entangled in a gory path of murder.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the film titled “MaXXXine” is set to start streaming on Max from October 18th onwards. This will be followed by its television premiere on HBO on October 19th. The movie, aside from Goth, boasts an impressive cast including Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito, Halsey, and Michelle Monaghan. Notably, it is a sequel to the 2022 film “X“, while “Pearl” (also from 2022) functions as a prequel to both movies.

Breaking the franchise record by grossing $21.5 million at the box office, MaXXXine received a mix of praise and criticism from both critics and audiences, achieving the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score among the series. While earned a 94% fresh rating and Pearl boasted a 93%, MaXXXine could only muster a 73% rating. In his review for MovieWeb, Will Sayre commented: “‘West’s latest film may fall short compared to Pearl in terms of timeless, impactful content, but it excels at delivering a distinct fusion of genres and subgenres.”

Yasser Medina from Cinefilia had a more critical perspective, stating, “The film’s visual style accurately captures the essence of 1980s American culture, but as a slasher horror movie, it could use more impact in its portrayal of violence and the cost of fame.” Similarly, Adam Nayman from The Ringer shared this viewpoint, noting that while the ending of MaXXXine might be expected, it was let down by its predictability considering the hints at a more complex narrative structure. However, fans who are yet to watch the supposed final chapter in the X trilogy can form their own opinions when it becomes available for streaming next month.

Have We Seen the Last of Mia Goth as Maxine Minx?

Following the cryptic conclusion of MaXXXine, numerous fans speculate if this marks the close of an epoch or if West is preparing for a fourth installment. Although he hinted earlier this year about concepts for extending the trilogy, it appears that the MaXXXine storyline may have reached its conclusion. This suggests that any upcoming films in the series might introduce fresh characters, possibly serving as a spin-off in some fashion.

In a Reddit AMA last month, West expressed his desire to collaborate again with Goth on upcoming ventures. However, he also emphasized that Maxine Minx has made her final appearance.

Would love to keep working with Mia. X trilogy prob done though. Happy with where we left it.

It seems for the moment that filmmaker Ti West might be venturing away from the series that brought him notoriety in the horror genre. His IMDb page currently lacks any upcoming projects, but fans would love to see his next work echo the style of films like “The House of the Devil” or “The Innkeepers.” These underrated gems in the genre tell complete stories and are deserving of far more acclaim than they’ve received from mainstream audiences.
