2024 Schedule Revealed for Mia Market, the Global Film and Television Festival Taking Place in Rome from October 14th to 18th.
This year’s keynote speakers will be Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope, famous for supervising popular series such as The Last of Us, Outlander, The Boys, and Cobra Kai; Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Odessa Rae (Navalny); and Clayton Townsend, a production veteran recognized for movies like Natural Born Killers, Born on the Fourth of July, and Bridesmaids. Townsend was also an executive producer on Netflix’s Italian-set thriller Ripley starring Andrew Scott.
In an informal setting, Ed Havard, Senior Vice President of Unscripted Programming at Universal International Studios, and Monica Rodman, Executive Vice President of Development at Universal Television Alternative Studio, are scheduled to visit Rome for a discussion about the future of unscripted productions. This conversation will take place in a panel that specifically focuses on the European production market.

Approximately a decade ago, when Mia first emerged, the worldwide television industry was experiencing an extraordinary growth spurt, fueled by global streaming platforms investing heavily in top-tier drama creation. However, those golden years have passed, and now frugality is once again popular.
Tridente acknowledged that large streaming platforms often face budget limitations. As a result, we’re witnessing an increasing trend of collaborative productions. This dynamic is particularly beneficial in markets like ours because we received around 600 proposals for co-productions this year. This significant number underscores the current industry trend where more companies are partnering not just for international collaborations but also domestic ones. It seems that this approach is evolving into a new method of financing, even for major productions.
Among over 600 pitch submissions, Mia has selected the most promising films, TV shows, documentaries, and animated projects to showcase at this year’s co-production market and pitching forum. In the TV drama category, there are 14 series proposals from 12 different countries, featuring intriguing concepts such as “The Aosawa Murders,” a crime series jointly produced by the U.S. and Japan, based on the best-selling novel of the same name; “Bat Out of Hell,” a Canadian production about the life of Formula 1 driver Gilles Villeneuve; and “Viktoria Frankenstein,” a German series that offers a fresh take on Mary Shelley’s classic monster story with a female lead character.
2024’s Mia event spans five days with over 80 sessions such as panels, presentations, seminars, and workshops. In addition, numerous market screenings of films for international buyers are planned. These include Beta Cinema’s period action movie “William Tell,” directed by Nick Hamm and starring Claes Bang from “The Northman.” This movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Another screening is Milad Tangshir’s drama, “Anywhere Anytime,” which debuted in Venice and is being distributed globally by Fandango Sales. Lastly, there’s “Surfacing,” an Argentinian drama directed by Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato, which made its world premiere at San Sebastian and is being sold by Visit Films.
This year introduces MIA XR, an exhibition highlighting 13 immersive and virtual reality pieces, boasting six world debuts.
The agenda for the upcoming conference is centered around major industry patterns, featuring discussions on uniting public and private investment backed by equity for European projects, establishing eco-friendly production methods, and exploring the influence of Artificial Intelligence in television and movie production.
