For quite some time, I followed along as Michael Bay steered the Transformers movie franchise, breathing life to the Autobots and Decepticons lore in live action back in 2007 and directing the first five films within this narrative continuity. Although he’s been acknowledged as a producer for the last three Transformers movies, including the animated Transformers One, it’s been nearly a decade since he sat in the director’s chair for one of these action-packed blockbusters. However, buzz around town suggests that this could soon change.
As a die-hard Transformers fan, I’m thrilled to share that according to my sources, it seems like Michael Bay himself is gearing up to direct a new Transformers movie for Paramount Pictures! It appears that Bay has expressed his desire to return to the franchise, rather than the other way around. Jordan VanDina from The Binge is rumored to be penning the script, and while we’ll have to wait and see if Bay gets to don the director’s hat again, he’s definitely planning to take a more active role as a producer. As for whether this new Transformers movie will continue the storyline from the previous ones or be a fresh start, that detail remains undecided at this point.
Regardless if the information is true or not, this development seems puzzling to me. The fact that the Transformers film series is already quite peculiar, and the return of Michael Bay leaves me scratching my head for two primary reasons.
Michael Bay Left The Transformers Franchise On An Underwhelming Note
It’s not necessary to explain to those who’ve seen the Transformers movies that Michael Bay’s directed ones didn’t win much praise from critics. The first film received mostly mediocre reviews at best, and the subsequent four were universally panned. However, Bumblebee and the original Transformers film were well-regarded by critics. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also landed in a mixed reception zone.
Stream your favorite content, including all the Transformers movies, on Paramount+ for as low as $7.99 per month or $79.99 annually. Upgrade to the Essential plan for an ad-free experience, or go premium and enjoy twice the catalog with Showtime for just $12.99 a month. No matter which plan you select, watching the action-packed Transformers is now more convenient than ever! Check out this offer today.
The majority of Michael Bay’s Transformers films were massive box office hits, with Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction each surpassing $1 billion globally. However, there was a significant decline in earnings from Age of Extinction to The Last Knight, earning only $605.4 million worldwide. At that point, it was the lowest-grossing Transformers film, although all subsequent releases have made less. In fact, even Michael Bay himself admitted he made too many Transformers movies.
Despite plans for a sequel to “Last Knight” being cancelled, it’s puzzling why Paramount would be keen to work with him again given his past performance with this franchise and the fact that his recent films, “6 Underground” and “Ambulance,” received minimal critical and commercial success. Although he remains a recognized director, the movie industry has significantly changed since he produced “Transformers” in 2007, suggesting it might be time to move on from this period.
There Are Already So Many Other Transformers Movies In The Works
Apart from Michael Bay’s involvement, the Transformers film series can continue without him, as there are several movie projects in different phases of production. Regrettably, a follow-up to Transformers One is not among them, which isn’t shocking given its poor performance at the box office.
In addition, it was highlighted in the Puck report that Josh Cooley, director of the film One, has sealed a contract to helm a live-action Transformers movie, and there are two more films in their initial stages of production. Notably, the ending of Rise of the Beasts hints at an upcoming Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover film, with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the main character. This would mark his second appearance in the Transformers franchise following his voice role as Optimus Prime in One. Although news on this crossover project has been scarce, it carries the promise of a significant cinematic spectacle.
I prefer the Transformers movie franchise to keep pushing boundaries, even when these attempts don’t always pan out. The return of Michael Bay might not aid in achieving this goal, but we’ll be sure to update you if this rumor proves true.
