As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the reunion of Michael Keaton and Tim Burton for the 2019 live-action remake of Disney’s classic, Dumbo, was a bittersweet experience. On one hand, it was a pleasure to see these two talented artists collaborate again after their successful partnership in Batman Returns. However, on the other hand, I have to agree with Keaton when he proclaimed that his performance in Dumbo left much to be desired. The film, despite earning a substantial box office return, failed to meet its estimated break-even point, and received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike.
27 years after Michael Keaton and Tim Burton collaborated on “Batman Returns”, they joined forces again in 2019 for a live-action adaptation of Disney’s timeless tale, “Dumbo”. As we eagerly await the release of their latest project, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, Keaton has been candid about his role in “Dumbo”, admitting that he felt he didn’t live up to expectations. In the film, Keaton played V.A. Vandevere, a ruthless amusement park owner seeking to capitalize on Dumbo for personal gain. While it received a mix of reviews from critics, “Dumbo” managed to gross $353 million worldwide against a production budget of $170 million, falling short of the estimated $500 million required for a profitable return.
“Working with Tim is a joy I can’t express enough, yet I can’t pinpoint exactly why we mesh so well – it just happens. However, I feel I disappointed him on one project, and that still bothers me. On the remake of Dumbo, I was woefully unprepared and underperformed.”
The film adaptation of Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton, received a lukewarm response from both critics and audiences, with Rotten Tomatoes ratings of 46% and 48%, respectively. Critics like Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian even labeled it as “jam-packed with retro-futurist boredom.” Despite the mixed reception, Burton expressed no disappointment in his leading actor’s performance. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly following Keaton’s comments, he emphasized that he was satisfied with the performance of his cast members.
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about. But whatever.”
Michael Keaton Says Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Is Better Than the Original
Despite the underwhelming reception of “Dumbo”, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are reuniting for the long-awaited sequel to their 1988 hit, “Beetlejuice”. This movie, which has taken 36 years to materialize, is a project that Keaton considers even superior to its predecessor. As he shared with Entertainment Weekly, “In many aspects, it’s even better“.
“This is something different. This one may be even better because it’s got a really strong – actually a stronger – story, kind of. It’s emotional. It’s very sweet. The cast is stupid good. The only thing I worried about was should we have left it alone?”
