Michael Rooker’s Arrival in ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Was Worth the Wait

In a few episodes left before wrapping up, “The Righteous Gemstones” introduces an exceptional new character by Danny McBride – Michael Rooker as Lori Milsap’s former husband, Cobb. It turns out that Cobb orchestrated the burglary at the family home where the Gemstone family’s golden Bible was stolen, and it’s evident that he’s a very dangerous individual. This development undoubtedly adds excitement for viewers.

It’s quite surprising that it wasn’t until the fourth season of “The Righteous Gemstones” that we saw Alabama native Michael Rooker shine as a remarkable character. Thankfully, his delayed appearance on the 2025 TV lineup was worth the wait, and his character, Cobb, seems destined to create more challenges for Lori and Eli Gemstone’s relationship. Throughout his career, Michael Rooker has embodied the spirit of the Gemstones, making me wonder if this casting decision was planned well in advance.

Michael Rooker Is The Perfect Actor For The Righteous Gemstones

Michael Rooker is well-known for his powerful acting performances, often portraying intense and emotionally vulnerable characters. It was this unique style of acting that made Yondu’s death in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” my favorite among major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) deaths to date. Rooker’s characters are prone to anger, frequently shouting, and even have a knack for being amusing. In essence, he was perfectly suited for his role in “The Righteous Gemstones,” given that the majority of the characters share similar traits over the course of four seasons.

Rooker is an exceptional actor who suits the show perfectly, but it seems the cost of hiring him might have been prohibitive for earlier seasons. He has playfully hinted that his character’s death on “The Walking Dead” was orchestrated by AMC because they wanted to increase his pay for the next season. However, considering “The Righteous Gemstones” managed to bring in Bradley Cooper for the premiere of the final season, it is possible Rooker’s fee was within their budget all along.

Is Rooker’s Cobb Milsap The Person Eli Should Be Worried About?

As a movie critic, I can attest that Michael Rooker is such a formidable actor that he made me believe Yondu could stand up against Thanos. Thus, it doesn’t surprise me in the least that he’s taking on a villain role in “The Righteous Gemstones.” However, when it comes to Cobb Milsap, I must confess that he didn’t strike me as the sharpest tool in the shed. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that he could have dispatched all of Lori’s former boyfriends without help, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on other characters for potential suspects.

My analysis points towards Lori’s son Corey, portrayed by Seann William Scott, as the likely culprit. His unperturbed demeanor concerning Eli’s issues with his mother, along with his presence during her past relationships, raises suspicion. Regarding Cobb, I believe his character is likely to meet his end in “The Righteous Gemstones,” much like his previous demises in “The Walking Dead” and various James Gunn films. Given the series is nearing its conclusion, I find this outcome acceptable, as it marks the end of his character’s appearances.
