As a long-time fan and admirer of Michael Jackson, I can’t help but feel both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming biopic “Michael.” Colman Domingo’s portrayal of Joe Jackson promises to be complex and insightful, shedding light on the man behind the patriarch. Yet, it is Jaafar Jackson’s performance as his uncle that has me truly intrigued. From what little we’ve seen so far, he seems poised to capture the essence of MJ with grace and talent.

In the upcoming biopic about Michael Jackson, actor Colman Domingo (who plays Joe Jackson in the film) is giving fans a sneak peek at both his own performance and that of Michael Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson. The movie, titled “Michael,” is scheduled for release next year by Lionsgate. Jaafar Jackson, son of Jermaine, will be portraying his uncle in the film, offering a candid portrayal of the life of the iconic pop star, from his early years with the Jackson 5 to his death in 2009.

While chatting about his new film Sing Sing, Domingo mentioned the upcoming biopic where he portrays the head of the Jackson family. He hinted that when it comes to Jaafar Jackson’s role, spectators should be ready for an outstanding and captivating performance from this debuting actor.

One could anticipate a truly captivating show by Jaafar Jackson, whose portrayal of Michael is imbued with such elegance – reminiscent of the same talent for entertaining that Michael possessed.

Regarding his portrayal of Michael Jackson’s father as the head of the Jackson family, Domingo acknowledges that the pop star’s dad was a complex character. However, in order to make informed acting decisions and delve into the core of a person, the 54-year-old actor explains that it was his job for the film Michael. This means he sought to understand Michael Jackson on a deeper level to bring authenticity to his performance.

“I will provide an intricate portrayal of Joe Jackson, a figure often divisive in opinion. However, it’s essential for me to delve into the core emotions and essence of individuals. Therefore, my aim is to reveal the genuine feelings and spirit of Joe Jackson.”

Under Antoine Fuqua’s direction, known for hits like Training Day and the Equalizer series, the upcoming film Michael has generated a lot of excitement due to an earlier released photo of Jackson portraying his uncle. The striking similarity between the two is undeniable, and a behind-the-scenes video showcased Jackson rehearsing dance routines, suggesting he possesses the talent needed to bring Michael Jackson to life on screen.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year, Fuqua, who is directing the biopic ‘Michael’ with the cooperation of the Jackson estate, expressed his intention to portray the singer’s life truthfully. He aims to create a film that reflects everything known about Jackson, showing not just the positive aspects but also the challenges and complexities he faced. In his own words, “I want to tell it like it is – the artist, the man, the human being. The good, the bad, and the ugly.”

For several years, there have been a few Lifetime movies solely focused on Jackson’s life, but the upcoming film “Michael” will be the first feature film about the contentious singer to debut in theaters. The cast includes Domingo, Jackson’s nephew, as well as Miles Teller, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, and Jessica Sula. Anticipate the release of Michael, distributed by Lionsgate, on April 18, 2025.
