Michael Urie Says Starring in ‘Shrinking’ Pushed Him to Start Therapy: “I Enjoyed It”

As a dedicated fan of Michael Urie and his captivating performances, I can’t help but admire his courage and vulnerability as he embarks on this personal journey of self-discovery through therapy. The way he seamlessly blends his life experiences with his characters is truly commendable.

Michael Urie has learned valuable lessons from the characters he portrays, and he revealed that he embarked on a personal therapeutic journey following his role in Apple TV’s series “Shrinking,” which centers around therapy.

“The show is so, I think, careful and yet reckless with mental health,” Urie told People.

Starring Jason Segel as Jimmy, a mourning therapist who employs unusual and intensely private methods when dealing with his patients, the main characters are rounded out by Harrison Ford as one of the clients, Jessica Williams in another key role, and Urie as Brian, Jimmy’s closest friend.

Urie suggested that there’s no reason to feel embarrassed about seeking help for our mental health. Instead, he encouraged everyone to actively explore this aspect of their well-being and remain open to it.

In relation to his personal therapy experience, Urie expressed that he has found it “pleasurable” thus far. He added a light-hearted comment, saying, “It was quite entertaining,” but in all seriousness, he enjoys attending therapy and growing more intimate with his emotional wellbeing.

Through this process, he has also developed his unique perspective on mental health, stating that “Mental health has a scientific aspect, but feelings and emotions aren’t something that can be quantified scientifically.” He believes that each person finds their own path to understanding mental health. While he values the insights provided by his therapist, he acknowledges that they only form part of the picture.

In my own words, I’ve come to see therapy as merely a step in my ongoing exploration of understanding my heart and mind – an everlasting voyage that I embark on.

I’ve been on quite an adventure,” I shared. “There have been moments of aggravation, moments of joy, and moments where things got a bit puzzling – much like our beloved series. And just as it tackles fresh mental health challenges, so does this journey.

In the upcoming second season of the Emmy-acclaimed series, Brian’s narcissistic traits will be delved into more deeply. As Urie explained, “It’s intriguing and challenging to portray someone labeled as a narcissist, since you can’t directly tell a narcissist they are one.

Furthermore, the series will delve into various groups of selected families, a concept that Urie considered significant. “People form new chosen families for numerous reasons,” he explained, “not only because our biological families may be absent, for whatever reason, but they could be due to proximity, differences, or loss. This show encompasses all these aspects.” He added, “We seek and create a chosen family in situations where we cannot turn to our actual one.

He added, “Indeed, since I identify as queer and have relocated from my birthplace, it’s inevitable that anyone who departs their hometown will ultimately discover their own selected group of loved ones.

Shrinking season two will premiere Oct. 16.
