As someone who’s deeply into movies, especially the ones that push boundaries, here’s my take on sharing some minor spoilers for FX’s thought-provoking series, “Dying for Sex.” If you’re interested in diving into this captivating show, remember that a Hulu subscription is your ticket to a full viewing experience. Enjoy the journey!
The title “Dying for Sex” clearly sets the tone. This newly debuted series, airing on the 2025 TV lineup, focuses on a character named Molly who, upon receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, embarks on an exploration of her sexuality. As you might have guessed, this Hulu production is known for its sexually frank and explicit content. I had the opportunity to discuss the filming of these intimate scenes with Michelle Williams, who portrays Molly. In response, she shared her reasons for embracing this sex-positive series, expressing her willingness to take a bold leap before looking back.
As a passionate cinephile, during my recent sit-down with Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (starring as Nikki, Molly’s best friend and caregiver), I delved into their experiences on this fresh streaming series. Curious to know about the most daunting sex scene they had to film, I posed the question. Instead of pinpointing a specific instance, Michelle Williams shared her approach to immersing herself fully in the show and tackling those intimate scenes.
Initially, there were only one or two scripts available when we joined the show. So, I had no clue what role I would eventually take on. However, being someone who prefers to dive in headfirst, I was eager to collaborate with my now co-star, Jenny [Slate], as well as Kim [Rosenstock] and Elizabeth Meriwether.
Apart from feeling thrilled to collaborate with these exceptional ladies, Williams also shared that she was deeply touched by the true story of Molly, which served as the inspiration for the show “Dying for Sex.” This podcast is based on the lives of Molly Kochan (the character portrayed by Williams) and her friend Nikki Boyer.
The actress and executive producer shared with me that she felt deeply attracted to the original content and recognized it as something she had to contribute to its transformation, expressing this by stating:
I strongly believed in the journey of Molly and Nikki, and their story captivated me in a way I couldn’t fully explain. It was almost as if I was being pulled along, and all I could say was, “I’m under its spell, and I’ll follow wherever it leads.
In this series, there’s an abundance of sexual content that might be considered intense or explicit. It covers topics ranging from prolonged masturbation to attending a sex-themed potluck, delving into the art of dominance, and even includes a scene with a man who enjoys cross-dressing as a dog – Dying for Sex leaves no taboo untouched.
Williams admitted that such personal and detailed instances were likely to occur throughout our conversation.
The sequences just seemed to unfold, appearing one after another, leaving me thinking, “This is how it will play out.” In other words, they kept coming in rapid succession.

Instead, the humorous style of the FX series made her eager and open to participating in those scenes.
Apart from commending the use of an intimacy coordinator mentioned in a previous interview, Williams also highly appreciated the way sex scenes were handled in this show. In our conversation, he expressed his admiration for its portrayal.
To put it simply, they were all executed with a genuine love and tenderness for the relationships she forms, free from any embarrassment or condemnation. I believe this essential quality is what truly defines the series, and it was precisely this unwavering lack of judgment that resonated so deeply in Molly’s real-life journey, stirring me profoundly.

What Are Intimacy Coordinators And How It Has Changed Movie And TV Sets
From a perspective of having watched the entire series, I wholeheartedly concur with Williams’ analysis. The show “Dying for Sex” is remarkably devoid of judgement, instead embracing a wide spectrum of enjoyment and sexual exploration.
Molly plays a pivotal role throughout this narrative, implying the actress portraying her is present in every scene, delivering her lines with sensitivity and emotion. Her candid and heartfelt discussion on a topic often viewed as sensitive was poignant to listen to, underscoring the sex-positive and thoughtful nature of the series, “Dying for Sex.
