Microsoft apparently working on bringing back ‘lost’ Marvel games

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the prospect of revisiting some old Marvel games that have been lost to time due to licensing issues. The rumor of Microsoft bringing back Deadpool and Marvel Ultimate Alliance has me reminiscing about those good ol’ days when I spent countless hours saving the world as Wolverine or blasting bad guys with Deadpool’s signature weapons.

At present, we’re witnessing a resurgence in the world of Marvel video games, with studios like Insomniac Games, Arkane, and Skydance leading the charge, accompanied by Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and others. Though there have been numerous games inspired by the comic book adventures of the Avengers and X-Men in the past, unfortunately, a large number of them have faded away over time.

The ongoing problem of licensing constraints consistently causes frustration among Marvel enthusiasts. Games such as Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Destiny, and even 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers have become inaccessible for many due to these licensing issues, requiring ownership of a physical copy and outdated technology.

It seems there’s a surprising figure gearing up to tackle licensing problems, and it looks like Microsoft might be working towards reintroducing two major Avengers characters – possibly Deadpool from 2013 and the original Marvel team – back onto the Xbox platform, as per Nick Baker’s comments on the Xbox Era podcast.

The baker shared that Microsoft aims to reacquire the rights for Deadpool and Marvel Ultimate Alliance in order to release these games once more on PC and Series Consoles. However, he noted that this is still a work in progress, as the rights have been previously held by Activision and are now absent from digital storefronts following their loss.

Deadpool, the video game, is available on Xbox One and can also be played on the newer Xbox Series. However, due to the high demand for Deadpool and Wolverine merchandise, the price of a physical copy of the game has significantly increased. Yet, Baker considers this an obvious choice given that the latest Deadpool and Wolverine film collaboration has already grossed over a billion dollars at the box office.

Previously, there was talk about reviving some classic Activision games like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. However, since Marvel seems to be closely tied with Sony at the moment, and Insomniac’s Wolverine is coming up, it could prove challenging to see Deadpool return on Xbox again.

1. In response to the speculations posted on r/Gaming subreddit, one enthusiast expressed hope, saying, “It would be great… let’s see if it materializes. Microsoft should reach out to Hasbro and bring back the classic Transformers games.” Another individual voiced a request, “Bring back Wolverine Origins! I’m almost ready to purchase a PS3 copy on eBay, but they’re selling for over $150 now,” while a third fan expressed excitement, “If Marvel Heroes comes back, I might actually cry.”

It’s a complicated web of rights worthy of Spider-Man himself, and while Disney would undoubtedly want a slice of the Marvel gaming action, it sounds like things are in the early stages. Even as the industry moves further into a digital age, we’d love someone to dig up these old relics and give them another time to shine.
