As a connoisseur of contemporary art who has traversed the globe in search of thought-provoking exhibitions, I must say that Mika Tajima’s Penumbra at Pace Hong Kong is an absolute gem. Her multidisciplinary approach to her craft resonates deeply with my own life experiences, as I too have found myself navigating the complexities of a technology-driven world.
Multidimensional artist Mika Tajima recently debuted her initial solo display at Pace Gallery in Hong Kong. Titled “Penumbra“, this exhibition highlights four separate collections of work, each demonstrating the versatility of her artistic abilities across various disciplines.
Tajima’s work is renowned for its blend of scientific and philosophical aspects, focusing on the concepts of selfhood and control within a technologically advanced society. She examines the intricate connections between digital and artistic technologies that shape physical, sensory, and mental encounters.
Title “Penumbra” mirrors the area that bridges shade and light, representing the subtle dance of understanding and liberty. Key aspects feature artworks from the “Art d’Ameublement” series, where paint pigments suspended in the air are used to generate luminous gradients on see-through acrylic casings. These captivating pieces entice viewers into their reflective expanse.
Furthermore, Tajima’s “Negative Entropy” textiles convert sound activity from the auditory realm into visual spectrograms, investigating the conversion of fleeting energy into tangible form. The display additionally features glass “Anima” sculptures and rose quartz “Pranayama” sculptures, blending aspects reminiscent of traditional acupuncture and energy healing practices.
Mika Tajima’s “Penumbra” solo exhibit is being displayed at Pace Gallery in Hong Kong and will be available to the public until December 21, 2024.
