As a seasoned movie critic who has seen more superhero movies than I can count, I must say that the prospect of Mike Colter reprising his role as Luke Cage in the MCU is music to my ears (and probably to many fans’ as well). Having watched him bring Luke Cage to life on the small screen, I can attest that he embodied the character perfectly with his powerful presence and charismatic demeanor.
Mike Colter seems open to reprising his character, Luke Cage, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He initially portrayed the Marvel comic book hero in the series ‘Jessica Jones’, later starring in a standalone series which spanned two seasons; he also featured prominently in ‘The Defenders’. Although Netflix canceled all the Marvel shows they were airing, the comeback of Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher has sparked optimism among fans for more appearances from the Defenders.
Colter recently discussed with Comic Book the possibility of reprising his character Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At this stage, it appears there are no definite plans, but Colter remains open to the prospect of coming back. Ultimately, the decision hinges on the narrative they aim to develop. In his own words:
“I’d be thrilled to delve into it, should they discover a means to access it. I’m joyful that Charlie Cox and the team are getting a reboot, although I’m unsure if Luke Cage is included in this reboot. I’m not harboring any secrets about my expectations.”
Additionally, he expressed his thoughts about Marvel Television revamping “Daredevil: Born Again” to make it more aligned with the original Netflix series’ tone.
1. “I believe that was a good decision. Trying to restart it was unnecessary. Frankly, I’m puzzled as to why they would do that. To me, it seems obvious – if it wasn’t broken, there was no need to repair it.”
Where and How Luke Cage Could Return
In stark contrast to his stance in 2023 when he declared Luke Cage was out of sight, Colter now appears open to reprising his role as the hero. However, due to his commitments with his current TV show, Evil, a comprehensive comeback as Luke Cage seemed challenging. With Evil set to conclude in two weeks, Colter’s schedule may be more flexible. Despite fan speculation about him appearing in Daredevil: Born Again as a potential adversary for The Kingpin (as Mayor of New York in the comics), such an appearance seems improbable at this time.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’d be thrilled if Colter’s character, Luke Cage, made a comeback in various Marvel productions. Given his status as a New York City hero, he seems like an obvious choice for a role in the upcoming Spider-Man 4. However, Sony might prefer a more widely recognized Marvel figure to attract a larger audience.
It might be wise for Marvel to think about incorporating Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, in their future projects. The character is well-loved in the comics and had a highly successful TV series on Netflix. In fact, the demand was so high when it premiered that the Netflix servers even crashed. With Charlie Cox’s Daredevil making a comeback receiving such positive feedback, reintroducing Luke Cage is likely to pique fans’ interest.
