Mike Flanagan's Clayface Movie Just Took Another Big Step Forward, But Now I Have Three Big Questions About The Batman Villain's Big Screen Future

As a seasoned gamer and DC Universe aficionado with decades of comic book lore under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming Clayface movie penned by Mike Flanagan! The news that this horror masterpiece is slated for a 2026 release has sent shockwaves through the comic book community.

Recently, it’s been confirmed that Mike Flanagan is penning a movie for DC Studios about the villain Clayface, with an expected release on September 11, 2026. This news alone is exciting, but there are also some intriguing details about Clayface’s future in live-action films that leave us wondering. For instance, when will we see this character on the big screen? Additionally, what can we expect from Clayface in these upcoming DC Studios productions?

How Will This Clayface Mesh With The One We’ll See In Creature Commandos?

James Gunn, head of DC Studios, confirmed on various social media outlets like X (previously Twitter) that the upcoming movie featuring Clayface is set within the DC Universe continuity. This means it’s the character’s second appearance in the DCU since Alan Tudyk announced back in November that he will voice Clayface in the series ‘Creature Commandos’, which debuted last month and can be streamed with a Max subscription.

Now here’s where things get interesting: while Tudyk voices a comedic version of Clayface in Harley Quinn and Kite-Man: Hell Yeah!, he’s described his Creature Commandos take on the character to Rotten Tomatoes as “a killer. He’s a homicidal maniac.” That by itself is no issue, but in Deadline’s writeup about Clayface’s release date, he “won’t be painted as a villain.” So what’s the deal here? Does the Clayface movie take place before his Creature Commandos appearance? Is it set after and he just softens up? I’d like to know what the narrative paths for this version of Clayface looks like, especially since this will be a horror movie.

Will Alan Tudyk Place Clayface In The Movie?

Alan Tudyk is certainly no stranger to performing in live-action movies and TV shows, with notable examples including Firefly, Doom Patrol, 42, Peter Pan & Wendy and Resident Alien. James Gunn has also said that actors who voice characters in animated DCU projects will also play them in live-action. Nevertheless, ever since it was reported that Daniel Craig is leading a Sgt. Rock movie, I’ve been wondering if that rule will always be followed, as Maury Sterling voiced Rock in the latest Creature Commandos episode.

I’m by no means saying Tudyk couldn’t pull off performing Clayface in the movie, I’m just wondering if Gunn might make an exception to this rule, especially since Tudyk could also still appear on camera in the DC Universe as either Doctor Phosphorous or Will Magnus. Also, Clayface is a shapeshifter, so does that mean a series of actors will play him in a prominent capacity instead rather than just one? It’s worth thinking about.

Is This The Only Cinematic Clayface We’re Getting?

According to an article by Deadline, there are whispers that Clayface might appear in “The Batman: Part II,” set for release at the end of 2026. However, it’s important to note that this sequel and other projects in the Batman Epic Crime Saga exist in a different universe from the DC Universe. Coincidentally, the DC Universe is planning its own Batman movie titled “The Brave and the Bold.” If these Clayface rumors are true, it could mean we’ll see two different cinematic Clayfaces in the future.

It’s uncertain when details about “The Batman: Part II” will be revealed, since we’re currently unaware of the plans. Given that the Crime Saga is set in a grittier reality, it’s likely that Clayface would be portrayed differently than the typical giant, monstrous clay creature. Instead, he might have a more flexible face and function as a traditional master of disguise, similar to his depiction in “Batman: Caped Crusader”.

It’d be great if answers to my questions come quickly, but it’s reassuring to know that Clayface’s character will see an upgrade. Be sure to visit TopMob regularly for news on the progress of the Mike Flanagan-written film.
